In a business where piracy has become commonplace, many have criticized the often enormous fines placed on those illegally sharing music. In an effort to ensure that their citizens “will not face disproportionate penalties for minor infringements of copyright,” Canada has placed a cap on file-sharing fines.
Individuals in the country will no longer be forced to pay more than $5,000 Canadian (or $5,035 US) for music piracy. Limits on commercial level music piracy, however, remain the same.
