A History of the "Apache" Breakbeat

Switch "A Bit Patchy" (2005)

Album: N/A
Label: Dubsided
Producer: Switch

"I love doing that crazy, crazy breakdown where you think it's going to go off and go somewhere and it doesn't; instead it comes back real minimal," Dave Taylor, the Cheshire, England, producer-DJ better known as Switch, told XLR8R in 2007. Exhibit A: This stab-heavy reworking of "Apache"-issued in 2005 but taking off worldwide the following year-which helped earn Switch's work the term "fidget house."

He reworks the drums into a straighter 4/4 rhythm, giving the rhythm a forceful forward hop that reveals new shades of the original. It's enough to make you think that maybe folks will be finding new things to do with "Apache" for a while yet.
