A History of the "Apache" Breakbeat

Schoolly D "Housing the Joint" (1987)

Album: Saturday Night! - The Album
Label: Jive
Producer: Schoolly D

Not everyone who sampled "Apache" during rap's golden age just looped it, and this crafty number from the Philadelphia gangsta progenitor is the perfect example. Added by Jive Records to Schoolly's second full-length, Saturday Night-The Album, after it hit as a 12-inch, "Housing the Joint" showcases a snippet from Sly & the Family Stone's "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" (1970), but it's built on a single-bar loop of Errisson's percussion whose cadence bears only a ghost-trace of the usual "Apache" roll.
