Trackmasters Tell All: The Stories Behind Their Classic Records (Part 2)

Rihanna "If It's Lovin' That You Want" (2005)

Album: Music of the Sun
Label: Def Jam

Poke: “Jay Brown just signed Rihanna to Def Jam. Jay Brown was managing us at the time and he was like, ‘I got this girl Rihanna and she’s got a bunch of pop records and we want some urban stuff. She’s Caribbean so we were trying to figure out how do we put together a collaboration or something that makes sense with her being from the Islands.’

“We were trying to come up with melodies and concepts. We were just trying to mix the Caribbean shit with what she already does and still keep it a little street. The pop essence of what she was already doing so that’s how we came up with that record.”
