When Lyor Cohen wanted to co-opt the Native Tongue movement, he had to go through Lighty. This eventually lead to Lighty working at Rush Artist Management under the guidance of Cohen, who became a mentor to him. At Rush, Lighty worked with artists like Public Enemy and Big Daddy Kane, and sharpened his management skills in the process.
