The 50 Best Songs of 2012 (So Far)

29. Lana Del Rey "National Anthem"

Album: Born To Die
Producer: Emile Haynie, Jeff Bhasker
Label: Interscope

When the video for "National Anthem" dropped last week, Lana Del Rey had a lot of critics after her; some in disgust, others in awe. With A$AP Rocky as JFK and Lana as Jackie, the stunning visuals and historical accuracy of the video fit Del Rey's beautifully captured the "love story for the new age."

Awesome video aside, there's no denying that the fifth single from her Born to Die album is one of this year's best. Del Rey's ability to match her sultry vocals to an elegant string section is remarkable—and with lyrics like "Um, do you think you'll buy me, lots of diamonds? (Yes, I also brought my gun)," she reminds us that her housewife-gone-gangster persona ain't no joke.
