The 100 Best Hip-Hop One-Hit Wonders

79. US3 "Cantaloop" (1993)

Producer: Geoff Wilkinson, Mel Simpson
Album: hand on the torch
Label: Blue Note Records

Built off a sample off Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island," Us3's "Cantaloop" went Gold in 1994 and peaked at #9 on the Hot 100. It was the jazz rap outfit's only Top 40 hit, but it helped drive sales of their first LP, Hand On The Torch, to platinum sales. After a few years of touring, the group's lead rapper, Mel Simpson, split, and randomly, underground rapper Shabaam Sadeeq wound up contributing vocals to their 1997 follow-up album, Broadway and 52nd.
