The 100 Best Hip-Hop One-Hit Wonders

100. Smilez and Southstar "Tell Me" (2003)

Producer: DJ Nasty & LVM
Album: Crash The Party
Label: Trans Continental Records

Smilez and Southstar were a group out of Orlando, FL, who hit it big in 2003 with "Tell Me." Though it wasn't a smash on pop radio, it hit No. 10 on the Billboard Top Rap Songs chart, where it played for months. The video was in constant rotation on BET and MTV. But perhaps much of the song's success could be attibuted to the beat, built off of a sample of Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye's "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)," which had also been interpolated for Ja Rule and Ashanti's "Mesmerized," as well as 50 Cent's "Ghetto Qu'ran (Forgive Me)." Another case of a great sample carrying a hit record.
