With Black Up, Shabazz Palaces had one of the most critically acclaimed hip-hop albums of 2011. At the same time, it might have been one of the most overlooked projects according to mainstream standards.
Led by Ishmael Butler of Digable Planets, Shabazz Palaces were one of the first hip-hop acts signed to Sub Pop Records. In June of 2011, they released an extremely experimental album that pushed the sonic boundaries while somehow managing to stay in line with a grounded hip-hop mentality. This video features a collection of songs from the group's debut album paired with visuals directed by Kahil Joseph. Check out this premiere of the unique video and get a taste for what Black Up is all about.
