His name is Marshall Mathers. He's just a regular guy who happens to have a few alter egos, some skeletons in his closet, and a way with words.
OK, maybe he's not so regular, seeing how the man also known as Eminem has rhymed himself into Greatest Of All Time contention—not to mention that his every move has been publicized and scrutinized since 1999, when The Slim Shady LP donkey-punched the game silly, making it unsafe for pop stars, moms, and anybody else who pissed off the Detroit representer. Ever since, the rap superstar has attempted to keep his private life private, a task he himself makes difficult by always being so brutally honest in his songs. It's his compulsive willingness to share his raw feelings in inspired lyrics and wide-ranging flows that has struck a chord with fans.
But even before his breakthrough, Em was a promising MC looking for his chance to blow. Controversy aside, at the essence of all his music there has always existed a deep-rooted respect for hip-hop. Every lyrical war he waged, whether it was against kin, rap rivals, or the media, every confrontational and/or funny remark he made on record—it could all be traced back to his humble beginnings as a battle rapper from the wrong side of the tracks.
His rise to fame is a real-life drama full of protests, court cases, and a duel with drugs. But, above all else, it's the passion that burns within his competitive nature that has set him apart from many of his peers. How the Great White Hope became possibly the G.O.A.T. is a story best told in verses, so given the fact that The Marshall Mathers LP was just certified diamond, Complex felt it was the perfect time to compile 100 of Eminem's best sonic scriptures to tell the tale of this rapper/producer, shit-starter, loving father, and survivor. As you'll see, Eminem's saga is as much about where he's from, where he's been and where he's at—back on top.

Stopped reading at #98, when you listed "Puke." That's one of the WORST Eminem songs ever, not the best. Jesus Christ, dude. It was bad enough when you listed that forgettable leaked track "G.O.A.T" at #99. What an awkward, mushy-mouthed mess. Like I'm going to spend time, waiting for 97 pages to load, when the first three were iffy at best ("Love The Way You Lie"? Really), and godawful at worst ("Puke"? Uggghhhhh.) Get better ears.

wow. what an absolutely horrible list. i'm sorry. i should have stopped reading this completely once i saw that G.O.A.T. was listed at #99. Wow. As an eminem fan i am embarrassed for this article, and as a hip-hop fan i'm crushed to see that such ignorance. it's a sad thing to see this list, knowing that this is really the first "official" list of em's greatest works and it has failed miserably. It's upsetting to realize how much people really think they know about Em's music but show their ignorance to everything Em represents in a list like this. It shows me that even writers and editors today have fallen into the trap of only recognizing radio/commercial/poppy music when Em's TRUE lyricism from the late 90s/early 00s ("Till Hell Freezes Over", "Low, Down, & Dirty", "If I Get Locked Up Tonight") means nothing to people today. But it's true, lyricism is too complex for the writers and editors of today and therefore, we are left with this disgusting list. How upset I am to see an article praising Em's wordplay and talent is all complete stupidity, as this writer is purely convinced "Puke" is a showcase of that talent. For all of the REAL Eminem fans, i apologize for this man's list. We WILL one day make a list of his 100 greatest songs, and goddamn will it be tough to do.

I went through the whole list and there are questionable inclusions, but what I think is more criminal are the exclusions that were made. Mentioning ANY tracks from Relapse and failing to include Beautiful is sad to me. Of the recently leaked tracks, I'm annoyed that G.O.A.T. made it over 2.0 Boys, and the fact that there is not even a mention for You're Never Over (the second verse is the most tear-jerking thing Eminem has ever put to wax) is a shame. Remember Me? should most definitely be on the list if for no other reason than Sticky Fingaz's scene-stealing verse. Infinite is way better than It's OK. Love the Way You Lie Part II is better than the original. Under the Influence is the best D12 cut ever. No Apologies from The Re-Up is easily his best track of the 2004-2009 period. Unlike everyone else, I admire Puke being on the list, as I too found it to be a brilliant track in its weirdness. It's one of the only good tracks on Encore in my eyes, not because of the lyrical performance but because of the palpable hatred it contained.

Actually, the word cracker isn't a racial slur but more of a compliment to people of white skin. The term was used to describe the white people who were in power and had control over other people (slaves). They would crack the whip at slaves, hence the term cracker. Little fyi, just so no one gets insulted :) Also yea this list was a little off. But it was cool to look at and at least see what was coming next. I think Encore and Relapse get a bad rep. They aren't his best work and for the most part they are pretty whack - but they are a lot better than what the average rapper puts out. Which shows how scary good Eminem is. Would have liked to see more Recovery on there as well.
