The 'Buying Jordans Vs. Traveling' Debate Broke Out on Social Media Again

How many Jordans could a passport holder buy if they owned a credit card?

Actress and Twitter rabble rouser Amanda Seales, of Insecure fame, decided to make a series of statements to the social masses late Sunday night. They are as follows:

If you're buying Jordans and Nike Suits but you're sleeping on an air mattress, YOU'RE LOSING.
If you're buying Jordans and Nike Suits but you don't have a PASSPORT, YOU'RE LOSING.
If you're buying Jordans and Nike Suits but you DON'T HAVE A CREDIT CARD, YOU'RE LOSING.

Passports, real mattresses, and credit cards good, Jordans and Nike Suits bad—got it.

Anywho, as expected, said statements caused a bit of a stir and roiled into Monday morning. Seales' statements aren't anywhere near new; it's like the $200 date debate that pops up on Twitter every other month or so, but on steroids.

Many people were like, "Here we go with this shit again..."

“passports and these hands” twitter riled up on a monday. lmao
It's bad enough when the timeline clocks your pockets, but when celebrities do it? Jesus.
When you have a passport, Jordan's, travel, and you still poor pic.twitter.com/15Hor95a9U

But others were quick to identify the real reason to call this out—status shaming:

Y’all making fun of folks who don’t or can’t travel abroad make it clear that your focus is on status, not on learning or well-being
I’m gonna mute “passport” indefinitely since, for some reason, y’all think an expensive pamphlet makes u better than someone.

Still, some chimed in with advice for how to get your point across, if you're truly looking out for your fellow man's best interests:

If you want to encourage Black people to get a passport, just list reasons why rather than simply lecturing them about the Jordans they own.

The more comical among us rephrased the statement as a question, and got some pretty fire answers that were hella meta and pushed things into Twitter meme oblivion:

If you take a girl on a $200 date wearing Jordans and a Nike suit, but she doesn't have a passport, are you gonna split the rent?
Only if she’s making a stack a month. https://t.co/EIbcg8UtGA
Only if she talks routes while snorting cocaine after telling me she doesn't mind the word female & I can use her towels to dry my hands. https://t.co/qr025YT3XL
That depends on if she let me play my mixtape in the car https://t.co/Rqb0EozQgu
Depends on the body count if he or she uses dove to bathe and take a knee for oppression. https://t.co/Tfyq919wxj

But Twitter user @beauty_jackson seemed to have the best, and most relevant, perspective of all:

Talk about travel, specifically people who for whatever reason don't, is always going to come off as classist.
With or without a passport, you can't beat my ass. And really, that's what it all boils down to. Who has coffee?
