PROMO: Artist Lauren Hom Finds Space to Create Just South of LA

For one designer and visual artist, life truly is a beach.

It’s ironic that so many people who live in Los Angeles barely ever see the ocean. To visual artist Lauren Hom, that’s pretty much unimaginable. Known for her work as a designer, illustrator and master calligrapher, Hom derives a great deal of her inspiration from being in close proximity to the Pacific Ocean—in particular, along the sandy shores of Redondo Beach.

Redondo is one of several dreamy beach towns located just south of LA. If you’ve ever visited, you’ve seen firsthand that it pretty much fulfills the fantasy of what Southern California living should be. For someone like Hom, whose work is known for bright color palettes and playful letterforms, being in such a warm, bright, vibrant place provides a true wellspring of activity.

The EFFEN ‘Space to Create’ series highlights creative ambassadors around the country using artistic expression to drive today’s cultural movements.

In the video above, Hom takes us to a few of her favorite spots in and around Redondo Beach, including the Redondo Beach Pier, the beach itself, and the iconic old school waterfront arcade The Fun Factory. As she does, she details just how important location really is when it comes to creativity.
