Fans across the galaxy united earlier today to honour the iconic sci-fi series, Star Wars. May 4 officially marked the sixth annual celebration of the beloved saga, and just about everyone got in on the festivities. If you ask this writer, we should just double down and make today a national holiday. How else can we properly enjoy Star Wars films, animated shows, and video games? This dude is about to venture into the world of Knights of the Old Republic for the 37th time, and he’ll need all of the extra time he can get to escape the Sith Academy on Korriban. What were we talking about again? Oh yes, today’s Star Wars celebration.
While our genuine love of the fictional universe is about as pure as the Force itself, there are some nasty followers of the Dark Side that will try and capitalize on Star Wars for really some sus reasons. Lost amongst great tidbits via the film’s production crew, special merch releases, and all around geekdom, were brands looking to infiltrate the viral hype. Sure, there were some quaint nods to the series, like Transport Canada recalling AT-AT Walkers due to “poor cold weather performance”. Other folks however, squeezed the fun out of the entire worldwide celebration and butchered the Star Wars universe for their own personal gain.
Perhaps the best example of Star Wars-related struggle posts, came from Canadian political parties. May 4 saw all of the Liberals, NDPs, Conservatives, and even Greens, post very unlit things to Twitter. The two major heavyweights went a tad further and slandered each other using some good old fashioned Star Wars memes. And yes, the results are about as lame as you'd expect. Get a dose of them below, and try not to strain your face muscles from all of the cringe.
The Liberals and Conservatives were easily the most combative today, and utilized their entire social media team to cook up some spicy moving pictures.
Oh man, just look at those hashtags! Check out that hilarious video! Damn, it's really cool to see such hip political parties appeal to us #nerds!
The NDP took a more subtle approach, which was way less in our face but still pretty forced (all puns intended).
The Greens on the other hand, were the closest group to being woke today, but ultimately had us shrugging like Kanye.
Yes, just another day in the life of political parties and their social media accounts. Next time, save the online roasting for Wendy's.
