Footage of a United Airlines passenger being dragged from his seat and forcibly removed from an overbooked flight at O'Hare International Airport has inspired widespread outrage. In a press release shared at the peak of the controversy, United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz had the audacity to characterize the passenger's forcible removal as a mere re-accommodation:

While United's PR strategy in light of this troubling incident has been perplexingly vague, reactions on social media have been far more succinct:

PEPSI: We made the biggest PR blunder of any major company this year.

UNITED: Hold my beer.

If only that United passenger had handed the crew a Pepsi.

This could be me or you next time. Shame on @United who broke customer trust + instigated this. Shame on the airport cops. Cowardly assault. https://t.co/MY729HippE

@carterjwm They might knock you out in the process though, so I wouldn't take it.

And for those defending United and the involved officers, well, um:

A Chicago Aviation Department officer was placed on leave Monday, CBS Chicagoreported. In a statement, Chicago Aviation Department spokesperson Karen Pride said the officer was on leave, pending an investigation. "The incident on United flight 3411 was not in accordance with our standard operating procedure and the actions of the aviation security officer are obviously not condoned by the Department," Pride said.
