If we're being totally honest, 2016 has been a pretty crappy year. The last 365 days have taken some unfortunate turns, from highly questionable president-elects, to the loss of music legends, and many more bummers that we're still trying to forget. While we anxiously look forward to a clean slate in 2017, it's still nice to discover some pleasant news that gets lost in the pile of sadness and WTF moments we've been having lately. One of these nice little moments comes from Canada, where everyone is so damn nice, even the police are concerned with the amount of pleasantries. And because it's a piece of Canadian news, it involves a frozen moose.

Earlier this week, firefighters in Shediac, New Brunswick, received a call from a concerned bystander. The person reported a frozen moose caught in the middle of an icy river and unable to escape. When authorities arrived at the scene, they noticed the creature about 25-30 feet from the shore, and confirmed that it was unable to free itself. With a little help from the RCMP, the firefighters chopped away at the ice, freeing the moose from its unfortunate situation.

Speaking with Global News, local firefighter Julien Boudreau, said that his team assessed the danger before venturing onto the frozen waters. As to why they felt the need to save the animal, Boudreau said it was all about safety and prevention. "If we don’t go, chances are that somebody else will go, and that somebody may not have the expertise or experience of going on thin ice and may not be equipped to do so".

Once free, the moose gained its strength and was encouraged back onto land by the crew. “We made a channel from the moose to the shore by breaking up the ice," Boudreau said. "Once we broke around the animal she sunk into the bottom and stand on his own feet on the bottom of the water”. The firefighters stated that it only took a few minutes for the animal to ventured safely back into the wild.
