One person is dead and at least three others were injured Tuesday by a shooter in Azusa, California. As of press time, the suspect is still at large and believed to be heavily armed, according to the L.A. County Sherrif's Department

Details were scarce, but the L.A. Times reports that the shooting happened in a residential area around 2 p.m. local time, when the gunman fired at least 10 rounds at a group of people. Shortly after, about 20 police officers responded to the scene, where they found the suspect with a rifle. The gunman reportedly fired 20 shots at the officers, who took cover and fired back, before running into a private home and barricading himself inside. No officers were injured in the shooting.

Two schools and a day care in the area are locked down while the shooter remains at large. Because the shooting was near two polling places, nearby voters are being urged to head to other polling areas.

A neighborhood resident, 67-year-old Roberto Chavez, said he and his wife witnessed the initial shooting while sitting on their porch. He told the L.A. Times he didn't know the suspect's name; however, he recognized him as someone who frequently visits his neighbor's home.

Officers have instructed those in the area to stay inside.
