The head of the Chicago Police Department is seeking to fire five police officers involved in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.
According to the Associated Press, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson formally filed the motion on Tuesday, almost two years after McDonald was gunned down on 4100 S. Pulaski Rd. Johnson is now asking for the dismissal of Jason Van Dyke, the officer who shot the black teenager 16 times, in addition to officers Janet Mondragon, Daphne Sebastian, Ricardo Viramontes and Sgt. Stephen Franko, who were each accused of giving false reports after dash-cam footage contradicted their claims.
The filing comes two weeks after Johnson announced his intentions to file administrative charges against seven officers involved in the shooting; however, according the AP, one of the officers stepped down on the day of the announcement, and another resigned Tuesday.
In November of 2015, Cook County prosecutors charged Van Dyke with first-degree murder in the death of McDonald. He has pleaded not guilty.
The Chicago Police Board will hear the officers’ cases beginning next month.
