A drunk, off-duty New York Police Department officer drove his SUV into a Williamsburg, Brooklyn sidewalk early Saturday morning, killing one man and putting one woman in the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to the New York Daily News. Two other bystanders, one man and one woman, were also injured and taken to the hospital.
The Daily News also reports that the officer, Nicholas Batka, attempted to flash his badge and flee the scene just after swerving his Dodge Durango onto a sidewalk filled with people. He was apprehended thanks to passersby who saw him try to run out of the car, according to the New York Post, and kept its doors closed until police arrived.
“The EMTs had to get a saw to remove the man impaled on the railing ... another man [looked] like he took a chainsaw to the knee,” 35-year-old witness Jaminah Kang told the Daily News.
35-year-old witness Kate Hanley told the Post that someone on her stoop "had a bone sticking out of his leg."
"I heard people screaming and saw people lying all over the place. Just covered in blood and really badly injured,” Hanley said.
The Daily News also reports that NYPD Inspector Scott Shanley told reporters at the scene that Batka had been charged with DWI and suspended from the force; he was later charged with manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, and assault. You can watch a video from scene (warning: it is graphic) above.
