Donald Trump Attacks Hillary Clinton With Overtly Anti-Semitic Tweet (UPDATE)

Donald Trump's original tweet, which has since been deleted, contained the words "Most Corrupt Candidate Ever!" inside of a Jewish Star.

UPDATE 07/04/16:

Two days later and Trump has responded to his controversial tweet saying the star depicted is not the Star of David. First he tweeted:

Dishonest media is trying their absolute best to depict a star in a tweet as the Star of David rather than a Sheriff's Star, or plain star!

Later he released an official statement after Hillary Clinton's director of Jewish outreach, Sarah Bard, released a statement in regards to Trump saying the star used was a sheriff's star. Buzzfeed Newsreported the statement called the star a "blatantly anti-Semitic image" taken from "racist websites."

Part of Trump's statement reads: "These false attacks by Hillary Clinton trying to link the Star of David with a basic star, often used by sheriffs who deal with criminals and criminal behavior, showing an inscription that says "Crooked Hillary is the most corrupt candidate ever" with anti-Semitism is ridiculous…"

Trump campaign social media director Dan Scavino also released a statement in line with Trump's saying the star was not from an "anti-Semitic site" and that it was a sheriff's badge meant to "fit with the theme of corrupt Hillary."

On Monday the Anti-Defamation League also released a statement about Trump's tweet:

See original story below.

As we've seen thus far in the presidential race, presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump isn't shy about attacking the other presidential front runners on Twitter. Saturday, Trump took to Twitter once again to condemn presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton—or "Crooked Hillary," as he likes to call her. While Trump coming for Clinton on Twitter is commonplace at this point, Saturday's tweet contained some overtly anti-Semitic imagery, which has predictably upset many.

Trump tweeted out an image of Clinton's face superimposed over stacks of money with the words "History made" in big block letters. The image contains a Fox news poll which shows that 58% of people think Clinton is corrupt, but the real kicker is the six-pointed red star—otherwise known as the Star of David or the Jewish Star—that contains the words "Most Corrupt Candidate Ever!"

Many have assumed the subtext of the image is that Clinton is controlled by Jewish donors and their money.

The original tweet has since been deleted and replaced by a similar tweet in which a circle has been substituted for the star. Even after tweeting out a new image, Trump's account kept the original six-pointed star-featuring image for several hours (as you can see in the image above, the original tweet was kept up for several after it was posted). Vox reports that the original post remained up "about an hour" after the tweet with the circle went up.

As is the case with most controversial things Trump does, the ordeal inspired major backlash on social media. The fact that Trump deleted the original tweet only aggravated the situation.

It should be interesting to see how Trump recovers from this one.
