New information is emerging about 25-year-old Micah Johnson, the man authorities say is responsible for the July 7 shooting deaths of five police officers and the injury of seven more cops and two civilians in Dallas. Johnson, a U.S. Army veteran, was blacklisted from an unidentified black power group after being deemed "unfit for recruitment," according to The Daily Beast

The name of the group for which Johnson sought membership was not given, but The Daily Beast characterized the group as one of several Johnson was interested in that believes "in armed resistance against white society, especially police." The shooting in Dallas occurred during a demonstration in response to the police killings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, La. and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minn.

After it was revealed to the group that Johnson was discharged from the Army over sexual harassment charges (he stole women's underwear from a corporal), Johnson's request for membership was declined, according to The Daily Beast.

The Daily Beast further reported that, although he was effectively blacklisted from membership across militant black power groups, Johnson attended protests related to police brutality against black people and liked a number of black power groups on Facebook.

Johnson's parents, James and Delphine Johnson, told TheBlaze Monday that after returning home from Afghanistan in 2014, Johnson was disillusioned with the military and developed a high level of interest in black history and far-left black empowerment groups.

Johnson's mother said her son had never indicated an outward hatred for white people, adding that what he did hate was "injustice." Johnson told negotiators over the phone that he wanted to kill white police officers due to the recent police killings of black men.

Johnson was killed at the scene of the shooting by a robotic bomb deployed by police. So far, the investigation has revealed that Johnson planned and carried out the shooting alone.
