Coins, Cannabis and Clubland: What Does a Sadiq Khan Mayoral Win Mean for LDN’s Youth?

Right now, London is heading to the ballot station to cast its vote for the next Mayor.  If opinion polls are to be believed (and I mean, they really shouldn’t be after last time), Tooting MP Sadiq Khan is likely to sweep to a comfortable victory following a high-profile battle between Labour’s Khan and Conservative Party poster-boy Zac Goldsmith. But what difference will the win make to London’s young people?

Club Culture

London has seen approximately a third of its music/club venues close, suffering under planning and licensing rules. It’s a story that is familiar to Glasgow, Manchester and other cities across the country—so much so that The Nighttime Industries Association (NTIA) has launched Night Life Matters, a campaign highlighting the importance of club culture to the UK. So what’s this Mayor going to do about it?

Khan, who has said on record that he spends his time knocking about late-night hub Vauxhall with pals, one of whom is politician and UK Garage DJ Chuka Umunna, probably respects the impact of a good shuffle.

"I don't want young and creative Londoners abandoning our city to head to Amsterdam, to Berlin, to Prague where clubs are supported and allowed to flourish" Khan said in an interview with Dazed. "I want them to be able to celebrate what they love in the city that they love, rather than punish them or force their activities underground or abroad."

"Too many bars and clubs have been forced to close because they can't afford to soundproof their premises once new residential developments have been built nearby."

"A third of London's small music venues have closed since 2007, damaging our city's cultural offering and having a negative effect on jobs and the economy. I will make it more difficult for redevelopment to result in the closure of heritage and cultural venues by strengthening the London Plan."
