Valentine's Day has come to be known as "Singles Awareness Day," and that's not typically considered a positive thing. Sitting in a bar alone on Feb. 14 and glancing around at all the couples next to you is supposed to make you feel like a failure, but it shouldn't.

In fact, the couples surrounding you may actually be jealous of you for being alone with unlimited freedom and zero drama.

If you're bummed out over flying solo today, here are some things you should keep in mind.

1. You have a zero percent chance of arguing with your significant other today

3. Being single means you've been doing you

Not being in a relationship is a sign that you're not compromising. Instead of dragging yourself through dates you don't want to go on, staying with a partner who isn't treating you right, or cutting down your work hours to devote time to a relationship, you've been doing you.

Relationships can be sources of fulfillment, but they also take work. So, when you're not in one, you have more time for your job, your family, your friends, and yourself—or, more importantly, your pets.

Sometimes, it takes a while to meet someone for whom that's worth giving up. And you should never compromise just because it feels like you've been single for too long.
