5 legit reasons for a friend breakup

You might know why you'd break up with a significant other, but friendship breakups are a whole other thing. What are justifiable grounds for dropping a friend?

Redditor garrett1999o3 wanted to know the Internet's "Oh sh*t, my friend's an asshole" moments, and the answers give a pretty good idea of what you should never put up with in a friend.

Here are a few of them:

1. Talking about you behind your back

As ColtonSmellsRealBad can attest, backstabbing is cruel, especially when it involves online stalking. 

"I found out he'd been obsessively stalking my Reddit account and telling my other friends everything I would write about so they could make fun of me. I had to delete me old account and make this one. I don't post nearly as much," they said. 

The stalker/backstabber's name was Colton, so at least it appears the joke's on him now. 

2. Complete disregard for public spaces

It was an especially careless act of littering that did saruhtothemax's friendship in. 

"I was walking the mall with this girl from work who I was starting to become friends with," they said. "She was sipping a smoothie while walking near the edge of the second floor and when she finished it she just casually tossed the cup over the ledge like it was no big deal. Didn't even look back. Just 'Oh I'm done with this! Might as well toss it over here! Who cares where it lands!'"

Unless this was an athletic feat that somehow got the trash in a garbage can, it reflects a disregard for public spaces and other people. 

 

3. Immature pranks

Mitchenmanjensen prefaced their response by saying their friend is "not really that big an asshole," but Redditors begged to differ.

"He'd grab stuff out of my lunchbox or off of my lunch tray if I wasn't paying attention," they wrote. "One day he happened to be behind me as we were driving to school, and he thought it would be funny to tailgate really close the entire drive. He also thought that it was hilarious to go around 'sack tapping' everyone, every single day. Sometimes it's just dumb sh*t that adds up."

Mitchenmanjensen is not the only one to see sack tapping—a slang term for smacking someone in the balls—as a friendship deal-breaker. 

"I had a friend who thought it would be funny to sack tap people until he did it to me and I broke his nose with the spine of a chemistry book," said melloboi23. "I don't think he sack taps anymore."

4. Mooching

"He ordered shots for the two of us and six other girls at the bar we didn't know while I was in the bathroom," recounted NumenSD. "When I came back the bartender poured all the shots, we took them, and then told my friend it'd be $80. My friend points to me and says, 'He's paying.'"

Enough said.

Research has found couples that argue about money are more likely to get divorced, and apparently, the same goes for friends. Especially when one is a giant mooch. 

5. Blabbing secrets

Boattof*ckoffityland's friend had a forgetful moment that revealed valuable information about her. 

"Told her a personal story, asked and trusted her to keep it to herself," they recalled. "A few weeks later: 'So a friend told me this fucked up thing....' And tells me that exact story."

Apparently, this is a common betrayal.

"I just ended a horribly one-sided relationship with someone like this," said real_yarrr_shug. "She had literally been turning around telling everyone every personal thing I had been telling her." Not cool. 

Ultimately, though, you don't need to justify ending a friendship. If it's not working, you don't have to try to make it work.

But if one of your friends has done any of these things, you're definitely doubly justified in "breaking up."
