Football fans less likely to have sex on the first date, OKCupid survey reveals

To celebrate football season, OKCupid crunched the data on its NFL fans and revealed some surprising results.

It turns out you can learn a lot about your date based on whether they’re a football fan, and what team they rep. Here are a few patterns that emerged when the dating site analyzed 20,000 member profiles that mentioned NFL teams:

If your date takes you to a sports bar, they won't likely go home with you afterward—unless they’re rooting for the Miami Dolphins, that is.

Fifty percent of OKCupid’s user base would sleep with someone on a first date, compared to 43 percent of NFL followers in general. On the high end, 51 percent of Dolphins fans said they would be into it, while Cardinals supporters are a little more conservative, with 34 percent willing to take the plunge on the first date.

This might reflect a larger pattern of football fans being more conservative: A study by research firm Experian Simmons showed that Republicans are 21 percent more likely to be NFL enthusiasts than Democrats.

One matchmaking question OKCupid asks its users is: “In the line ‘Wherefore art thou Romeo?’ what does ‘wherefore' mean?"

Twenty-seven percent of Buffalo Bills fans were able to identify the correct answer as “why,” whereas only 14 percent of San Francisco 49ers devotees did the same. Perhaps people in upstate New York have more literary knowledge than those in the Bay, or maybe they’re just more likely to Google the answer.

The Pittsburgh Steelers may have won the most Super Bowls, but the Dallas Cowboys win by a landslide on OKCupid with nearly 3,000 fans; meanwhile the New York Giants take second with a little over 1,500. The least frequently mentioned teams were the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Tennessee Titans, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Answers to the question “What's your relationship with marijuana?” varied by region, with the biggest smokers supporting Bay Area teams the Oakland Raiders and the 49ers. Meanwhile, the most marijuana-averse fans root for the Cincinnati Bengals and Indianapolis Colts. There may be something to the stereotypes of California hippies and wholesome Midwesterners.

So, the next time you’re planning a first date on OKCupid, it may be worth a little online stalking to discover your date’s NFL allegiances. That one piece of information could provide more insight than you’d expect.
