Beyonce's in a new fashion spread in French fashion mag L'Officiel Paris, and she's getting some flack for it. Why? Because in some of the shots, she appears wearing dark makeup, commonly referred to as "blackface" (you may recall will.i.am raising some eyebrows when he performed in similarly dark makeup at the VMAs this past September). In a statement, the magazine stood behind the shots, saying Bey was "paying homage to African queens" and called them "a return to her African roots, as you can see on the picture, on which her face was voluntarily darkened. "The designs are all reflective of the African influence on fashion this season," the statement said. "As for the artistic make-up, the inspiration came from several African rituals during which paint is used on the face ... "We find the images beautiful and inspiring."
