The Associated Press is reporting that Clay Aiken is running for congress in North Carolina. Aiken, who wasn't even able to win American Idol against Ruben Studdard, has been working as a special education teacher in Wake County after making the difficult decision to give his career in entertainment a rest.

The openly gay dad will be running as a Democrat in a state that has yet to legalize same-sex marriage. Also expected to run are Keith Crisco, a former state commerce secretary of Asheboro, and Toni Morris, a licensed professional counselor of Fayetteville. This is stiff competition for the born-again Christian crooner whose credits also include playing Sir Robin in Monty Python's Spamalot on Broadway.

According to the report, Aiken will campaign on improving the economy and the importance of education. It has not yet been confirmed whether or not he will make public appearances on the campaign trail wearing his mind-numbingly awesome technicolor dreamcoat
