A puzzling, overwhelming number of tumbleweeds have descended upon the town of Clovis, NM. This is cause for concern.

As Esquire mentions, there are literally thousands of tumbleweeds in the town, with three to four feet of of them covering the ground in some parts, preventing some people from even leaving their homes. It's become such a problem that the military has been recruited for assistance:

Members of the nearby Cannon Air Force Base were brought in to help remove the writhing mass of tumbleweeds, which will be taken to a landfill and broken down so that they don't get blown back into town, like your mom was.

Mom jokes aside, tumbleweeds are created when plants dry up, dislodge and blow around—if they aren't obstructed. An occurrence of this magnitude is extremely rare, but, as Esquire notes, it's probably the result weather extremes in the U.S. that have made for a phenomenon—and nuisance, if you're one of the people who can't leave their house because tumbleweeds are at your door.
