Aside from electing public officials, voters made a big decision involving New York's future yesterday. They supported the amendment to state constitution that would allow up to seven Las Vegas-esque casinos to open in the state

In a statement, Gov. Andrew Cuomo—who backed the amendment—said "The passage of Proposal One is a big win for local governments, school districts, and taxpayers across New York State." Aside from Cuomo's support, the initiative was aided by a team that raised over $4 million to champion the cause.

This group felt that the casinos would assist the struggle-sections of upstate New York, as well as help the state take back money lost to others that New Yorkers frequent for gambling purposes. "Since taking office, my administration has focused on reviving the state's economy, and today's vote will further pave the way for the creation of new jobs, construction, and increased tourism in communities across the state," Cuomo added.

Officials say the casinos will generate 6,700 construction jobs, 2,900 permanent jobs and an extra $420 million in tax revenue. No big deal.
