E-Cigarettes Not Allowed on LIRR

Pause before you use that e-cigarette on the Long Island Rail Road. Confusion prompted the Long Island Rail Road Commuter’s Council, a commuter watchdog group, to inquire about whether or not passengers can use the smoke-free cigs while aboard trains. For the record, they cannot.

Council chair Mark Epstein sent a letter to the LIRR asking for clarity on its electronic cigarette policy. On Friday, he learned that legistlation which prohibits smoking on trains, platforms and at stations also includes electronic cigarettes.

"Our lawyers have looked closely at the legislation and believe that the law covers e-cigarettes, as well as all kinds of tobacco substitutes,” LIRR spokesman Salvatore Arena explained. The LIRR will update the rules and regulations section of its website to make this clear moving forward.
