We all need to do better, because most of us are guilty of paying more attention to our phones than surroundings. Next month, Accident Analysis & Prevention will publish a study revealing that 1,500 people were hospitalized in 2010 thanks to distracted walking, i.e. injury due to texting or whatever else while walking. Worse, that figure has been on the incline since 2005 (second image). Blame smartphones.
Everyone glued to Twitter while walking isn't a hazard to themselves and others, but behavioral scientists have learned that it takes as much brain power to use your magnificent, multi-purpose phone as it does to do something simple—like walk. It's just as bad (and as dangerous) as texting while driving.
So, pedestrians, you have a decision to make: Would you rather pay your phone bill, or your phone bill and a hospital bill?
