Two Arrested in Alleged Terror Plot Near Toronto

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have arrested two men who allegedly planned to bomb a Via Rail train near Toronto. According to RCMP Assistant Commissioner James Malizia, the alleged plan was "al-Qaeda-supported," and the men were given "guidance and direction" from "al-Qaeda elements" located in Iran

Both suspects, Montreal resident Chiheb Esseghaier and Toronto resident Raed Jaser, face charges for "conspiracy to carry out an attack against and conspiring to murder persons unknown for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a terrorist group," CTV News reports.

Malizia added that had the attacked been executed as planned, the end result would've been several "innocent people being killed or seriously injured." He was also quick to reassure the public that there was "no imminent threat to the general public, rail employees, train passengers or infrastructure.”
