It's sad to see former friends turn into enemies, but it's even more tragic to see pets become victims during the process. A 47-year-old Brooklyn man allegedly killed his roommate's fish because she decided to move out of their Nostrand Avenue apartment. José Santiago reportedly snapped when 45-year-old Brenda Alvarez told him that she was moving out, pushing the tension between them over the limit.
Alvarez says that when she started to pack her belongings, Santiago "went crazy" and killed her fish—named Bonnie and Clyde—in front of her; he flushed one down the toilet and suffocated the other in a bag. Alvarez, who treated the fish like her children because she can't have kids, was devastated. "I did everything for him, and the only thing I ever asked him to do was the laundry," she said, "So why did he do this to me?"
Santiago was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and assault. He was released, and is furious that Alvarez hasn't been charged, claiming that she started the dispute. "I have a mark on my head," he reportedly said, "but you're not going to do anything about it. She pushed me first and started the whole fight."
Come on dog, you're in your 40s. Grow up.
