8. Small's Paradise

Tales from this integrated nightclub offer a small glimpse into Malcolm's first life— a dark, drug-filled chapter that ultimately resulted in his incarceration. Malcolm, a charming young waiter at this nightclub, learned the code of the Harlem underworld while working here. He became versed on the art of hustling inside the basement space, where he brought Chinese food and bootleg liquor to the small tables. But "Detroit Red" (named for his bright red hair) eventually got in over his head. He was fired after referring an undercover military agent to a prostitute, a bit of an extra service.
