9. Savoy Ballroom

Malcolm visited a number of clubs on his first jaunts to New York, but one in particular intrigued him: Savoy Ballroom, the birthplace of the Lindy Hop. Those of you who have seen Denzel Washington's depiction of Malcolm might remember a scene from the movie in which the civil rights leader performed the dance. The club's no-discrimination policy was a draw for wealthy New Yorkers who wanted to experience an 'exotic' night on the town. Malcolm would go on to show many a white stranger the ropes, before souring on the race as a whole.
