The Obama Administration announced today that certain young, illegal immigrants will no longer face deportation. The Department of Homeland Security has implemented a policy, effective immediately, that protects immigrants under the age of 30 that arrived in the United States illegally from being deported.
If they came to the U.S. under the age of 16, are under 30 now, have lived here for 5 years, committed no crimes and received a high-school degree, they can apply for a renewable deferment of deportation.
This is a really big deal. And during a re-election year, a very ballsy move by the President. Still screwed up that a very reasonable and commonsensical approach to immigration is "controversial," but whatever—this is good news.
