Every year, since 2006, American Express, in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, awards millions of dollars in grants for the restoration and preservation of historic places. This year, the partnership is coming to New York to give away $3 million to four lucky buildings. More than just good corporate citizenry, or even the needed preservation of a few key buildings, the principle goal of this endeavor is to raise public awareness about the importance of historic sites and preservation efforts. By opening the vote to the public, AmEx seeks to spread the word about the value of preserving all our historic places as far as possible.

For this year’s competition in New York City, 40 non-for-profit or governmental organizations were selected from a pool of hundreds that had previously submitted their grant applications. Each entrant stated specific needs that the grant would remedy, and established a value somewhere between a quarter of a million and $1 million dollars. The four top vote receivers will have their entire applied grant funded, and the remaining funds will be distributed as determined by AmEx.
