See Foul-Mouthed Rap Genius Blowfly in Miami Friday (9/30)

In celebration of The Weird World of Blowfly, a new documentary about Clarence Reid, a 72-year-old, unbelievably foul-mouthed performer known as Blowfly, the Vagabond in Miami is hosting a treat of an event. Blowfly himself, widely known for his dirty parodies of popular R&B songs, will perform live, as will a team of the Vagabond’s resident Friday night DJs.

Having started out as a songwriter for artists like George McCrae and KC & the Sunshine Band, Blowfly took his career toward obscurity in the '70s when he sold his royalty rights and decided that songs about butt sex were more his forte. Since there was an honest-to-god record industry that existed at the time, this was essentially commercial suicide, but Blowfly carved out a niche for himself by starting his own record label. Sheer dirty-minded persistence has carried him throughout his life, since there’s always an audience for songs about dirty sex, but underneath that blunt potty mouth, there’s a master of subtle songcraft.

The film runs from Thursday, Sept. 29 until Sunday, Oct. 2 at O Cinema in Miami.
