Arthouse Alert: "The Outsiders" in Portland Thursday (8/11)

Based on S.E. Hinton’s violent coming-of-age novel, Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders gathered a who’s who of 1980s teen beefcake/heartthrob stars: Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, C. Thomas Howell, Tom Cruise, Ralph Macchio, Matt Dillon, and Emilio Estevez. The story focuses on a group of “greasers"—poor kids from the wrong side of the tracks, with either missing or abusive parents, who wear sleeveless clothing, use lots of pomade in their hair, and carry switchblades—who have a long-running beef with a group of “Socs” (from the word “social”), who are the rich kids with dock shoes and nice cars. When one of the greasers falls for a Soc girl (Diane Lane), the “Romeo & Juliet” parallels begin, and violence inevitably ensues. This is one of Coppola’s lesser-known films, but the attention he gave to such a small-scale story after the excessive project of the 1970s makes it one of his best. Plus, they're screening it on a rooftop.
