Hardcore for fans of pop music. Pop music for fans of hardcore. Either categorization can work for Toronto six-piece Fucked Up, an anomaly of so many forms that it doesn’t even make sense to call them anything but brilliant. Their last full-length, The Chemistry of Common Life, blew through melodic shards of feedback, grooving bongo workouts, and neck-throttling power chords as singer Pink Eyes grunted and howled.
Their new record, a rock opera titled David Comes to Life, comes out next week on Matador Records, and it’s even more forceful and undeniably catchy. They play Austin’s “Chaos in Tejas” festival this weekend, a four-day gathering of heavy rock bands. Stream the new record this week here.—Finn Cohen
