South Carolina’s Chaz Bundick, who records as Toro Y Moi, was among those artists the media kept placing at the crest of last year’s chillwave craze. While his 2010 release Causers of This (Carpark) did have a lot in common with the wobbly synth tones and hissing drum loops associated with the genre, his new release, Underneath the Pine, exudes a much different vibe. Trading hazy layers of beats for a deeper foray into traditional pop arrangements, Bundick has stepped out of the space he was pigeonholed into.
