In 1996, De La Soul opened their album Stakes Is High with a collection of people, famous and otherwise, recalling the first time they'd heard BDP's seminal Criminal Minded. Stakes Is High concluded with a brief snippet of someone beginning a sentence with, "When I first heard 3 Feet High and Rising"—then the album ends.
It's 2011 and Chi-town is gearing up for a De La show on Friday. That sentence can now be finished with no sense of impropriety (hell, it could've been finished in '96—Stakes Is High is an incredible album). Everyone by now should have memories of each De La classic (I remember buying The Grind Date at Best Buy after class back in high school, so there).
Get out to this show. De La Soul is one of the greatest groups hip-hop has ever seen.
