Live Show Alert: Big Daddy Kane and Brand Nubian Play Brooklyn Friday (3/25)
Classic New York hip-hop comes together in Brooklyn for this benefit show, the proceeds from which will go to Positive Seeds, a community organization that works with young people in at-risk communities. Big Daddy Kane, he of the thick rope chain, has been steadily appearing live for the past several years even though he hasn’t released a record since 1998. Rumor has it that he has taken up residence in North Carolina, where he is known to jump onstage when other old-school acts come through town.

Brand Nubian’s career has been peppered with controversy, and their place on a “Stop the Violence” benefit may seem incongruous when you consider that one of their most famous singles is called “Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down.” Regardless, it’s a good cause with some of the pioneers of a genre born in New York.
