Arthouse Alert: Telekinetic Terror with "Carrie" and "Patrick" Friday (3/18) in Durham

Durham, N.C.’s Retrofantasma film series presents this freaky double feature about disturbing psychic powers. First up is Brian DePalma’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Carrie, starring Sissy Spacek in her now-famous role involving a teenage girl’s revenge on her mom and her prom. Both Spacek and Piper Laurie, who plays Carrie's mom, were nominated for Oscars.

Patrick, an Australian film with some not-so-subtle references to Hitchcock's Psycho, tells the tale of a young man (the title character) in a coma induced by his doctors after he murders his mother and her lover. His telekinesis allows him to write messages to a nurse via a typewriter, and with his mind he defends himself against the doctors who want to kill him. He also never closes his eyes — the actor, Richard Thompson, was given special eyedrops that helped him keep his eyes open for long periods of time. Soundtrack by the fabulous Italian prog group Goblin. -Finn Cohen
