With the same wry humor that defined earlier films like
Raising Arizona and
The Hudsucker Proxy, the Coen brothers took aim at Midwestern America in
Fargo, a charming little tale about blackmail and kidnapping, all with copious amounts of bloody dismemberment. William H. Macy gives one of his finest performances as a weasel of a car salesman in Minnesota who hires two goons to kidnap his wife. When it all goes wrong, a pregnant police sheriff (Frances McDormand) from a small town outside of the capital pursues the case. With ample time for the violence to build, the Coens create a cringe-inducing slow burn of a thriller, complete with those charming Minnesota accents. Oh, you betcha.
