Arthouse Alert: Catch "Fargo," the Coen Bros.' Masterpiece, Saturday in New Orleans

With the same wry humor that defined earlier films like Raising Arizona and The Hudsucker Proxy, the Coen brothers took aim at Midwestern America in Fargo, a charming little tale about blackmail and kidnapping, all with copious amounts of bloody dismemberment. William H. Macy gives one of his finest performances as a weasel of a car salesman in Minnesota who hires two goons to kidnap his wife. When it all goes wrong, a pregnant police sheriff (Frances McDormand) from a small town outside of the capital pursues the case. With ample time for the violence to build, the Coens create a cringe-inducing slow burn of a thriller, complete with those charming Minnesota accents. Oh, you betcha.-Finn Cohen
