Trendhumper: Fair Isle Sweaters

The holiday season must be upon us, as we’ve been seeing more and more fair isle sweaters out here on the east coast. The knitting technique used to create patterns with multiple colors has been around for a minute, but first gained popularity back in the 1920’s when the Prince of Wales began rocking shirts with this type of knit in public. Now this throwback has returned with a slick modern styling. But are they too cheesy and festive? Tell us if these sweaters should be HUMP‘d or if they need to be DUMP‘d. Vote below…

Trendhumper: Messenger Bags

Usually associated with mailmen and crazy bike messengers, the messenger bag has crossed over from parcel delivery to becoming a popular alternative to the backpack. And why not—messenger bags (also called courier bags) offer the same toting ability as a backpack while offering easier access to your stuff while you’re on the go. Really, who wants to swing a heavy backpack around your shoulders every time you have to take out a book or magazine on the train? So the function is there, but what about the form? Should these be HUMPed or do they need to be DUMPed like last weeks leftover’s? Vote below.

Trendhumper: Fingerless Gloves

Damn, is it time to whip out the gloves already? We’re still waiting for the temp to drop a little more before we do, but that’s not stopping a bunch of dudes from taking to fingerless gloves to pass the time between now and then.

Usually worn functionally (think bike messengers), they’ve found new popularity as a purposeful alternative to bulky, full fingered gloves, allowing you to do things you normally couldn’t with gloves on: dial a number on your cell phone, eat a hot dog, flex your PSP skills. Trendhumper: Plaid Jackets

We love plaid. Not as much as Jazze Pha, but enough to know that the right piece of plaid can make your whole outfit pop. With fall sprinting into winter, our plaid garment of choice this season is the plaid jacket. Rooted in the 1970’s western workman culture, this throwback has returned with a modern style full of rugged countryside appeal. What do y’all think? Trendhumper: Slouch Beanies

What are slouch beanies, you ask? The term may be unfamiliar, but the look surely isn’t—we’re referring to those sagging, oversized skullies that have quietly taken over the streets this year. Sorta like Becks x hobo x Shibuya urchin on some faux rocker/skateboarder ish. Not that we’re totally hating, mind you. Since slouchies rest a little bit off the head, they are loose and comfortable, which makes them wearable even when it isn’t brick-ass cold. Trendhumper: Headbands

We’re not quite sure why, but during our travels we’ve noticed a resurgence of headbands. What was once an accessory relegated to the tennis and basketball courts then made fashionable by hippies in the ’60s and girls going for that earthy look, has resurfaced on men as one of the must-have wardrobe accessories for celebrities. We’ve seen Ashton Kutcher and one of the Jonas Brothers rockin’ ‘em; that alone may be reason enough for you to give up headbands altogether, but love it or leave it, this trend seems to be on the rise. Trendhumper: Necklace Overdose

Slick Rick and Gucci Mane may respectfully disagree, but when it comes to mens jewelry, we always tend to think less is more. Not only is it distasteful to rock the equivalent of a small car around your neck in these trying times (if you haven’t learned by now, there’s a good chance you will get got), it’s really hard to pull off the multi-chain look without looking like a douche.

All that said, we’ve been seeing a bunch of non-rapping celebrities and plain ol’ non-celebrities donning a massive number of necklaces lately, which leads us to believe this may be a major trend this summer. Trendhumper: The Color Neon

Just because the Skittles look is tailing off doesn’t mean that your outfit needs to be devoid of all color. A little flash here and there can make your outfit pop like a bottle of Rosé. If you’re looking to inject some flavor into your wardrobe this summer, you may want to look at what appears to be the hue of the season: neon.

We’ve seen this trend on the streets of Berlin, New York and San Francisco, and although a neon overdose is an automatic fail, the right neon accessories can liven up your outfit without making you look like a Euro-raver. Whether it be a full-on look like on our eccentric homie Taz Arnold, or quick hits—like lite-brite sneakers from Nike and adidas—neon is the color for this summer. Trendhumper: Pocket Squares

The homie Chris Bosh (far right) is a Raptor all right.

Like some fine-ass arm candy, a well-chosen accoutrement can definitely complete your outfit. A pocket square will accentuate a suit (or even a denim jacket) with a touch of class and a dash of color. Whether you’re channeling Humphrey Bogart or Cab Calloway, it’s all in the details.

We’ve already taught you the different variations to folding a pocket square—the guy to the left has the simple triangle fold, dude in the middle has a little more, uh, “flourish,” and finally, Chris Bosh sports the classic square-ended fold. Joining the influx of ’80s trends terrorizing the streets, the infamous touristy pouch known as the fanny pack is popping off these days in London, Tokyo and New York. Back in the late ’90s, there was a brief period when jumbo-sized North Face fanny packs were the move, but in 2009, the travel-sized accessory is going a little style-forward and high-fashion. You can’t front on the functionality (perfect for your wallet, passport, bottled water, and, er, lipstick, etc.) but is the man-pouch look a little much?
