• Teddy Pain might want us to believe that “Death Of Autotune” didn’t affect him, but the first leak from Revolver says otherwise. He isn’t using the infamous pitch correction software and the constant talk of haters reeks of insecurity. Decent track nonetheless.

Needless to say, we’re making sad-face emoticons over here at Complex; not only is the civilian population losing one of the South’s finest lyricists and a genuinely smart and likable dude, but it’s just one more objectively great emcee who gets chalked into the “Incarcerated” category. There’s more than 20 rappers locked up right now, but since we don’t really fux with shermhead cannibals, we had to narrow it down to our 10 favorite (including Tip). • Why We Miss Him: Who else got to be down with Native Tongues when they were 16? That shit was like Harry Potter levels of crazy for adolescent rap heads in the ’90s.

TRAGEDY
• Crime: Criminal sale of a controlled substance in the fourth degree
• Incarceration Location:Riker’s Island, NYC
• Why We Miss Him: He pioneered naming yourself after an international despot. If the Intelligent Hoodlum hadn’t become Tragedy Khadafi, we wouldn’t have legends like Noreaga, let alone MC Slobodan Milosevic (he’s serbin’ fools!).

PRODIGY
• Crime: Gun possession
• Incarceration Location: Gouverneur Correctional Facility, New York
• Why We Miss Him: Thankfully, we have his third eye shining on us through the internetz, so it’s almost like he’s still here–but we still miss that gruff-ass voice. He and Alc are like the Julius and Vincent of this rap game.

TURK
• Crime: Second-degree attempted murder, firearm possession
• Incarceration Location: Shelby County Jail, Memphis
• Why We Miss Him: Because without Turk, we’re denied our Hot Boy fix. Uh, pause.

NUMSKULL
• Crime: 15 felony charges, including rape, sodomy, and “forced oral copulation”
• Incarceration Location: Santa Rita Jail, Dublin CA (last confirmed location)
• Why We Miss Him: He still owes us 5 bucks!

SHYNE
• Crime: First-degree assault and wreckless endangerment. Or, in common parlance, “taking the fall for Puff.”

• Why We Miss Him: Moses Michael Leviy might be the hardest Jewish cat in the bing behind Bernie Madoff, but Hanukkah’s just not the same without him.

• Crime: Aggravated assault while serving a 90-day sentence for drug possession, theft and animal cruelty. No comment.
• Incarceration Location: Tent City Jail, Arizona
• Why We Miss Him: Who else are we supposed to get our political commentary from?

• Incarceration Location: Riker’s? Elmira? Woodburne? He’s been everywhere by now, so your guess is as good as ours.
• Why We Miss Him: It’s more that we’re just worried we’ll never see him again. After all, this is the guy who said “if I go to jail again I’m going under the bing”…

• Why We Miss Him: Listening to Mystikal was like hanging out with Saafir the Saucee Nomad after he drank a case of Red Bull. This dude raps so damn enthusiastically it sounds like he might fuck around and mow your lawn at any second. With his teeth.

After a yawn-inducing performance by Nina Sky, Jim Jones brought out Kid Cudi for “Day N' Night,” and his Dip Set crew performed a short set capped off by his current hit “Pop Champange”'minus Ron Browz, who later joined Busta Rhymes on stage for “A-Rab Money”. Although Ludacris went through his catalog of hits, he had to rely on Busta Rhymes to save his lackluster set, through a seizure-esque performance of “Scenario”.

After the Busta x 'Cris set, it seemed that the audio levels weren't the same, which meant that Young Jeezy and the headliner T.I. would have to perform their string of bangers at less than full strength. Regardless, the Snowman slang songs like “Put On,” “Bang,” “Trapstar,” and “My President” that rang off nicely. T.I.'s performance, which got overwhelming support from the trifey's in the crowd, was again plagued by shoddy audio. But the King Of The South went through hits both new and old like “Bring “Em Out”, “You Don't Know Me” and “What's Up, What's Haapnin'” and “Swagger Like Us,” which wasn't nearly as effective without the big three. All in all, the concert wasn't a total L, but if the audio team could’ve'pun intended'Got Their Shit Together, the Coliseum would've rocked harder than an must-win Islander playoff game.

He’s currently recording a new joint named “Jackin’ Swagger From Us,” featuring additional verses from Juelz and Lil Wayne, along with a re-recorded hook from M.I.A. and a new beat by Chink Santana. Complex: You and Juelz are all about that swag-splashing. How do you feel about not being included on “Swagger Like Us”?

Jim Jones: I think it was deliberate. I really do think it was deliberate; maybe in my sick twisted mind I'm a little crazy. People know who set the precedent as far as fashion in this industry and people know who damn near changed the world as far as fashion. You look at people, they went from the urban world of clothing, back when Rocawear and Sean John was cool. And then in the past 5 years I stepped in and gave them a taste of what rock and roll looks like from my side. I guess people would say from an urban side, and it seemed to catch on like wildfire, to the point that people was going to stores and asking for that Jim Jones look. Jim Jones: And look at the Vibe cover. Tell me who Jay-Z looks like in there? Did you see the picture of him? With the Louis Vuitton scarf and all that. Who did that resemble? You can say it. But he did it wrong; he had a Gucci belt with a Louis Vuitton scarf. Who does that? You smell me? That's like wearing one Nike and one Puma; how you going to get away with that? But I didn't take the song as a shot, because I don't feel like none [besides Weezy] of them possess any swag.

Complex: What about T.I?

Jim Jones: I don't feel like he possesses any swag. Not like that. It's fabricated. They're watching other people, then they try and do it. You know people that dress like T.I.? You know people that go out and say let me get a T.I. outfit or do you know people who say “yo, you're looking like Jim Jones?” Which one? Lemme hear it! When the bitches want to fuck you and the niggas want be like you, who got the swag? Niggas with money and fame always going to look like they doing something 'cause they got the camera in front of them. But the cool dudes always stick out no matter where they at.

Kuntry’s Commentary: “The intro is really who Big Kuntry is. Yeah, I play games, it’s funny, I make jokes, but I’m serious. It start off with all the jokes, but the verse is serious. I’m comfortable in my own skin, but I’m not comfortable in this game. This first album is more like an introduction, so I can get this out the way and get to a bigger, broader audience. [Comedian Lil'] Duval been with us since the beginning, since I’m Serious. Met him doing shows in Jacksonville, Florida, and he been ridin’ with us since. He’s in everybody’s damn video.”

“TOOL IN DA POCKET”

Kuntry’s Commentary: “I thug it out a lil bit. When we walk in that club, and ol’ Billy Badass wanna be Billy Badass, but remember pot’na'I’m in the club by myself, but best’a know I got ‘it’ on me. Redd make alternative music too; he make all different type of sounds that y’all haven’t heard yet, but he got that signature street music. He don’t use no samples, he got that signature sound, but a lot of people copying that sound. But he’s the best one with it.”

Kuntry’s Commentary: “They let me hear a lot of songs like ‘Maybach Music’. But at the time, when I was doing my album I was like, ‘Nah man, that’s not the south homie, I can’t get on that right now.’ At first I didn’t like the beat, and then it just started flowing through. It’s so different, it’s hard. They gave me another beat that I might use for the next album that’s jammin’.”

Kuntry’s Commentary: “If you feel like it’s [hip-hop] dead, come down here, and you’ll see me getting to the money and we still doing what we doing. It’s almost like modern day racism. It’s already hard being a black man, now I’m from the South, you hate me for that too? Because I don’t drop lyrics like the people you grew up listening to? Whoever your pioneers are are not our pioneers Down South. I’m talking for the South, this is how we feel. We was always rapping for our corner, our block. But now radio stations started saying, ‘We ’bout to start playing what’s in our city,’ and that’s how the South got up.”

It’s hard for a big company like Atlantic to see what they have, just like it was hard for Arista to see that they had a T.I., Colombia didn’t see they had a 50 Cent. So don’t oversee me because I’m the soul of a man. It’s all G to me, because if you don’t believe in me, that’s more work for me to do.”

“LOVE YOU THE RIGHT WAY” f/Lloyd

Kuntry’s Commentary: “I put this record on there because i was going so hard, I don’t want to lose the ladies. So I told the woman, if your man can’t fulfill your dreams, your dreams will come true over here. Lloyd make it R&B like a mutha, but I try to go against him and be on the same page, and the women eat that up. So if a male scan through that song, they’ll be like, Aww that’s an R&B song. But if they listen to it, they’ll be like, That’s right up my alley. Because that’s how it is.”

“WE HERE”

Kuntry’s Commentary: “It’s a real big street song. All that playing, you think it’s a game around here, nah we here. I’m a big boy boss, I’m the big homie, you need to get to know that.”

Kuntry’s Commentary: “Dro do his thing man, he’s crazy with the wordplay ["Super like Mario/Meatball raviol/29 hundred million, Grandma on the patio"]. Just separating ourselves from the rest. We high, but we focused.”

“POSSE” f/MacBoney & Yung LA

Kuntry’s Commentary: “‘Posse’ might start some fights. I wanted to make something for the real gang bangers out in the street, because I got some friends that do that…not saying they bad people, just saying…Yung LA is futuristic swag. He’s a youngster; he got the young cats behind him. From the beginning, I had him on ‘Going Ham,’ ‘Killin’ Em,’ and we did ‘Ain’t I’ together. After I took him under my wing and had him on shows with me, now he’s getting his own shows.”

“YEAH (I’M ON IT)”

Producer: Marvelous J
Kuntry’s Commentary: “That’s been blazing in Atlanta for a minute, and they still like it like it’s a new song. I put it on there so people that never heard it could catch up to it. Like ‘Going Ham,’ folks just catching onto the saying ‘going ham’. And that’s how my music always been. But I was way ahead of my time, so seven months later, that’s when the song blew up. Just like everybody feeling ‘The Baddest’ now. At first they weren’t feeling it, now they love it. Now shows poppin’ up for that song. I try to make music that’s relevant for now.”

“THAT’S RIGHT” f/ T.I.

Kuntry’s Commentary: “That’s a record that’s been out for a while, but the whole world hasn’t heard it. I had to put it on there because it just broke the ice. I took Tip’s hook from a song he didn’t finish. And he was like, “how you gonna take my hook'can I at least say it over?” So I had my producers, Nard and B, make a beat around it. So when folks be like, Tip trying to help Kuntry out on a record like “Shoulder Lean,” it’s not the same thing because I actually took it off a song and put it together.

BONUS COMMENTARY
Kuntry on T.I.’s feud with Shawty Lo…

I’m the oldest, Tip is like my young brother, ya dig. And the thing about [Shawty] Lo, Lo never been no bad person. When he lashed out at Tip with the little underground stuff, we didn’t understand what was going on. Especially when we asked him, ‘What’s up?’ He would be like, he ain’t had no problems. I don’t know if it was a publicity stunt; I don’t know what it is. I just feel like anything a person really do and feel, they’ll check it at the door. But that’s a situation Tip can handle. We handle all situations. I’m not finna addressed that, stick to the G-Code. I don’t live on the internet, I’m not a blogger. You gotta see about me just like you always saw about me, and that’s in the streets. Internet cats can’t get to the street. That’s why it’s not really beef, just the he-say she-say.

Verdict: We have much love for Dilla (R.I.P.) and the track has its merits, but Com's post-No-I.D. sound is altogether soft like Twinkie filling. With a sleeveless turtleneck on top.

BEFORE: “Criminology” (feat. Ghostface Killah)

AFTER: “Live From New York” (prod. by Infinite Arkatechz)

Verdict: The sad thing is, “Live From New York” is leagues better than most rap out today. But it's severely lacking when compared with any track off Cuban Linx.

RAPPER: SNOOP DOGG

BEFORE: “Gin and Juice”

AFTER: “Snoop's Upside Ya Head” (prod. by DJ Pooh)

Verdict: His longevity has proven that Snoop can rhyme (or sing) well over virtually anything, but his entire Dre-free sophomore album was a major letdown. Probably his worst album to date.

RAPPER: T.I.
O.G. PRODUCER: DJ TOOMP

BEFORE: “U Don't Know Me”

AFTER: “You Know What It Is” (Produced by Wyclef & Jerry Wonder)

Verdict: T.I. vs. T.I.P. is the only T.I. album without a DJ Toomp joint. It's no coincidence that it's also the worst T.I. album. The lesson? As always, never fuck with Wyclef. Thankfully, Toomp has a joint on Paper Trail.

BEFORE: “Grindin'”

Verdict: We fucks with a couple tracks on the new LP, but overall we can't get past the ABC production. Yo P'your boys need help.

The single was produced by Jim Jonsin, who’s on a bit of a roll right now after banging out Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop.” And although Jonsin has produced everything from teeny pop (Pretty Ricky’s “Grind With Me”) to heavy metal rap (Trick Daddy’s “Let’s Go”) in the past, his collaboration with Tip has the same airy synths and sing-along verses as Weezy’s recent hit. This past weekend at Hot 107.9’s Birthday Bash, the biggest night in Atlanta hip-hop, the city’s superstars all came out to perform at the Phillips Arena. Predictably, the show’s most talked about moments were the subliminal messages sent back and forth by Shawty Lo and T.I., who have been quietly feuding over Tip’s allegiance to Bankhead.

Lo started his set off by showing a video which depicted him running from a federal agent, who was played by an actor that reportedly resembles T.I. After performing the “Dey Know” remix with Ludacris, he ended his set with a screen that said “A New King Has Been Born,” an obvious jab at T.I.’s “King of The South” title. Tip’s headlining set included a vague response to his critics and a performance of “No Matter What” where he immitated Shawty Lo’s running man dance. See videos of both below.

On Paper Trail, the album he started recording in his home studio while on house arrest awaiting his gun trial, Tip seems determined to right his wrongs. He’s working with Toomp again, and the album’s title is even a reference to the fact that he’s been meticulously writing out his verses, rather than just freestyling off the dome. This morning, “No Matter What,” the first official joint from Paper Trail leaked, and it doesn’t disappoint. This is Tip at his most thoughtful and unflinchingly honest, speaking about overcoming his legal troubles like a motivational speaker. He even finds time to fire back at Shawty Lo, who has been throwing subliminal jabs at the King of the South over the last year:

“Set the standard in Atlanta, how to get, get, get it/So you up and coming rappers wanna diss, just kill it/I’m officially the realest/Point blank period/Whether I still live in the hood or just visit/Whatever you could do in the hood, I done did it/That’s why the dope boys and the misfits feel it.”
