COMPARE TO: Philips Soundbar

PRICE: $349

FUN FACT: If grey is too plain, you can also get the Soundbar in Red.

WHY COMPLEX IS CO-SIGNING:
So you blew a paycheck on a sick HDTV. You then got an HD cable box and set up your Xbox to stream Netflix movies in HD. Around this time you think you’re set, right? Nah, not quite. You maybe enjoying high quality visuals with your new set up, but what about the audio? We know your pockets are hurting after dropping all that dough on a new TV, but you don’t have to drop a stack to get your movies sounding as good as they look. Yes, a 5.1 surround sound system would be awesome, but if money’s tighter Tyga’s jeans, a system like Samsung’s Soundbar is perfect. It’s small, inexpensive and will perform well enough to make you think twice about ever going to a movie theater again…

DESIGN: The design here is pretty straight forward. Nothing too fly or flashy. And that’s a good thing. You don’t want your audio system drawing attention away from the TV. It’s very minimal in design—depending on how your TV is set up, you can throw it in a stand, or throw it on the wall using the including wall mounts.

FEATURES: The Samsung Soundbar is basically a 2.1 channel system. Meaning there are two speakers and a subwoofer. That may not sound like much. But wait until you listen to it. Samsung, using virtual surround sound processing, was able to create a small system that sounds like ones double its size. That’s all done using a Dolby Digital audio processor. We wish it had more processors, and connectors: There’s no USB connection, one audio input and no radio features. But even without all that, its still a good system. Especially with its wireless subwoofer. Using a 5.8 Ghz wireless connection, you can put your subwoofer anywhere in the room and have the sound signal reach it.

SUMMARY: If you’re looking for a low-priced home theater solution, the Soundbar is perfect. Just don’t expect it to do much more than deliver good sound from your movies and TV, as there’s limited inputs and outputs and no radio.

WHY COMPLEX IS CO-SIGNING IT: Most of us watch recorded TV a lot more than we watch live television. These days, who has time to watch everything? We either DVR the shows we want to watch, or like a lot of people, we just download it off the ‘Net. With today’s Buy It Now, you’ll no longer need to scan the torrent sites or message boards looking for that episode you missed. Elgato’s EyeTV Hybrid is one of, if not the, smallest HD TV tuners available for your computer. About the size of a regular USB flash drive, EyeTV Hybrid allows you record live HD TV from a number of different sources, and then allows you to edit out the part of the shows, movies and video that you don’t want using their EyeTV 3 software. They’ve just now announced compatibility for Windows 7, but if you have Mac OS X you get a bunch more features: smart playlists, automatic export to iTunes and support for EyeTVs iPhone app. You can also capture video from a number of analog sources, too like an old camcorder, a regular set-top box or a VCR. If you’re looking for a great solution to watch and record TV on your computer, check out the EyeTV Hybrid.

It's been a month since the launch of KanyeWest.com. How does it match up to his original online home?

Back in January, during his self-imposed exile, Kanye West apologized for the “slow posting” on his model, design and rant-filled KanyeUniversecity blog and announced, to the surprise of many, that he was working on an entirely new blog. We thought the man who claimed Twitter offered everything he needed less of would be working to limit on his online presence.

However, after a month or so of speculating and waiting, ’Ye finally launched his new site, KanyeWest.com on February 24th with his new video for “Coldest Winter” and an awesome photo of his arm piece, Amber Rose, recreating Jean-Paul Goude’s photo of model Grace Jones (which, by the way, was an out take from a Complex shoot that ‘Ye specially requested for the new site). Not a shabby start. But is it better than the site that landed on many top blogs list and was quoted on gossip sites, TV shows and magazines? A month into its existence we put together a a comparison of how Kanye’s blogs match up so far…

KANYEWEST.COM: All-black everything? Nah, ‘Ye’s off that. His new site sports a super-clean, all-white background that we’re guessing was put in place to show that he’s a changed man. Or something. Beyond the celestial background though, the site is a lot less cluttered, with posts appearing in a tumblr format and category buttons appearing at the top, but only when you scroll over them. The images, however, are huge and, while they look great, are a lot when trying to scroll through the page.

KANYEUNIVERSECITY: Predating the explosion of ning artist sites, the Universecity was a go-to for everything Yeezy, including tour dates, photos, links for purchase, and even a message board to discuss it all. With a black background and brightly colored links, the Universecity was a Kanye West amusement park, replete with fancy flash navigation. One of its more original functions was a calendar, allowing users to jump directly to any date’s entries.

ORGANIZATION

KANYEWEST.COM: A Tumblr-like site, KanyeWest.com is easy to navigate and even easier to become accustomed to. There are only two or three posts per page and the categories at the top of the page make it easy to jump from interest to interest. The site also developed its own video player, which would mean Kanye (or someone) would have to the take time to upload anything he wanted to share. It does not, however, seem to have a search function.

KANYEUNIVERSECITY: Though somewhat visually cluttered when compared to kanyewest.com, the Universecity was easier for fans and readers to navigate. On top of the more manageable picture sizes, there’s a reliable search window. And as we mentioned earlier, Kanye threw in a calender widget off to the right that lets you click a date to see all the posts for that day, making it super easy to find a post.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————

CONTENT

KANYEWEST.COM: As it’s phantom category links would suggest, kanyewest.com will cover pretty much the same things KanyeUniverseity did, with the notable exclusion being “Rants”, and the notable addition being the “My Camera” category which so far only has an image of a Givenchy shirt and, ironically, a rant. As yet, the majority of the posts are art, girls and fashion related. One noticeable addition to his new site is a custom video player. On his Univercity blog, Kanye was known to throw videos from a host of different sites—even if they were his videos. Now, he has a clean, streamlined video player than he (or whoever he’s paying) can upload his own videos for his fans to watch.

KANYEUNIVERSECITY: Within the Universecity, Kanye has big-upped everything from airplane designs to old R&B videos, posting music from artists he’d never met to songs he produced himself (usually after they’d already appeared on NahRight). Whether a platform to share his varied design interests with the world or a place to focus them, the universecity plays host to any and everything Kanye sees artistic merit in.

RANTS

KANYEWEST.COM: The new site has only hosted one so far and though steeped in motivation and titled, “Creativity,”. The presentation itself, giant faded gold text embedded on what reads like an e-scroll, could be labeled pretentious, but you know what? It looks cool. Many voiced their frustration at this new style: NahRight titled a post “Kanye’s New Blog Makes It Virtually Impossible For Us To Take A Screen Shot Or Copy Paste It”. We think that’s the whole point.

KANYEUNIVERSECITY: As probably the only time we were sure it was Kanye piloting the blog, Ye’s rants (most of which have been erased) were explosive. Whether defending his decision to make concert goers wait hours for a performance or just airing out closed minded fashion bloggers, you could count on the blog for Yeezy raw, misspelled and uncut.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————

COMPLEX SAYS: Though it’s slightly harder to navigate, the new site has a better url (for whatever that’s worth) and looks leaps and bounds better than the old blog. In addition, ‘Ye is actually making much of the content himself by creating GIFs and manipulating images in photoshop (in addition to adding the frames to pre-existing work) to create a blog which, in and of itself, is an organic and ever changing piece of art, rather than an aggregator of dope Swedish chairs. The photos are large and beautiful, its design is unobstructed by unneeded graphics, and now that his rants are well-designed images instead of text. Plus they spell checked!

You thought you looked like an idiot when you threw on the IMAX 3D glasses to watch Avatar? Well, rest assured there is someone out there that looks a thousand times sillier than you ever will. Who is that someone? Whoever bought one of these As Seen On TV Hats (real name, all gimmick) and actually wore it.

The ASOTH, or Asshole Hat, is a hat (or visor) that allows you to connect your iPod, iPhone or BlackBerry and watch videos hands free. We’re not sure when or where you’re supposed to wear this thing—they suggest the beach or gym. But we do know that if you really wanted to watch a movie or TV, you might as well have kept your ass at home, as no one, male or female, will come around you. Don’t think it’s that bad? Hit the jump to see a video of this thing in action. [LINK]

Apple’s iPhone is a triumph of form and function, we know. But anyone that owns one knows that after one drop that form is scarred for life. Yeah, it gets easier after the first nick—you’ll no longer baby it and wipe it down every time you use it—but why risk messing up a phone you saved a couple pay checks for? If you got one, you should have a case. You may think of big, bulky rubber cases when you think of a phone case, but that ain’t the case with the iPhone. There’s a bunch of ‘em that actually accentuate the look of the phone, as you’ll see in our picks for the 10 Best iPhone Cases…

WHY COMPLEX IS CO-SIGNING IT: Imagine how much better your day would be if, tomorrow morning, you were awoken by one of your favorite albums or mixtapes which continued to play, in crisp, clear quality, while you got ready for whatever you had planned. Seems like an awesome way to start the day, yeah? Yeah, we think so, too. That’s why we find today’s Buy It Now, the JBL OnTime 200ID so dope. Built around the same tech as JBL’s OnStage 200, the OnTime simply adds a digital clock and alarm clock features that allows you program the alarm to play either an alarm sound, the radio (FM or AM) or your iPod. The system is small, but the sound huge, able to properly fill, not your entire apartment, but definitely your room and the surrounding area. Thanks to some of JBL’s patented tech, you get bass deeper than you’d expect from such a small device as well as clear highs. And although it’s built for the iPod line, it still shows love for the other breeds of audio players: thanks to an auxiliary port, you can play whatever you want through the 200ID. The only drawback? Well, at $200 it’s a tad pricey, and depending on what song plays in the morning, you may just spark something and say eff work. Either way, it’s still dope. If Google has their way, all the software we use will get their Jamie Foxx and T.I. on and live in the sky. Or the “cloud” as it’s commonly referred to. We’ve already seen a number of companies release Web 2.0 programs meant to replace traditional software that lives on your hard drive—Google’s online productivity suite, Google Docs comes to mind. One of our favorite web programs is the online image editor, Pixlr.com.

While not as powerful or feature filled as Photoshop, it will let you do a lot more than most online image editors that remove red eyes and re-size photos. There’s a number of options for layers, color adjustment and over 15 built in filters. The interface is incredibly intuitive and easy to use; it’s also customizable so you can change things around to suite your habits. If you’re a heavy Photoshop use, this won’t replace it. But if you’re like the rest of us and only use the basic functions, Pixlr is worth a shot. Check below to see a video of Pixlr in use.

Most USB flash drives are made from cheap plastic that causes them to break under normal, everyday use: throwing them on your desk, dropping them on the floor—sometimes just opening and closing the latch on one is enough to break it. Not the LaCie WhizKey. Made from high-strength steel, with a scratch and water resistant connector, the WhizKey is the coolest and most durable USB drive we’ve come across. Yeah, they mostly serve to make people speed up in order to jump the readings (dumb sign makers: don't they know America has no shame. Well now a design and engineering team have constructed a vest that allows bikers to show off how fast they're going.

Designer Brady Clark and engineer Mykle Hansen put together the speed vest using a wheel speed sensor, a wearable numeric display, and an open-source mini-computer. Seems like a cool idea to us'you and your friends could get a few and have a race, or, better yet, when we're cruising by you in our ride, we'll gun the motor and figure out the speed differential it takes to knock a cyclist over. Check after the jump for a short clip of the vest in action.
We've always been fan of simple, D.I.Y. thinking, so we have to give it up to David Guillot, who created a hand-held land sail that can be used to propel your skate or snowboard.

While David is selling them for $59.99 each, he also posted a guide about how you can create your own using materials like duct tape, plastic tarp and some fiberglass poles. MacGyver would be proud. Watch a video of the sail below.

Award winning film collective, Semiconductor puts sight to sound as they animate recordings of magnetic fields.

We’ve all heard Skin Graft P go on and on about synesthesia and how N.E.R.D was so blown away by it that they decided to title their third LP, Seeing Sounds. Now, here at Complex the jury is still out on whether or not we believe you can actually see sounds'unless you’re tweakin’ on that good kush'but it did get us thinking. What if you really could see sounds? What would they look like to you? British film collective Semiconductor has a couple ideas.

For their short film, “Magnetic Movie” Semiconductor members Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt created a series of animations to bring to life a bunch of audio recordings they made of magnetic fields. The result is pretty crazy and not just because we think on an, um… higher level. The movie won Best Film at Cutting Edge at the 2008 British Animation Awards. Hit the jump to watch “Magnetic Movie” and head over to Semiconductor’s site to check out more of their short film works.

The days of over-exerting yourself by trekking around heavy luggage are done thanks to the Live Luggage P.A series.

Sure, 21st century technology hasn’t exactly lived up to expectations, with all the lack of flying cars, robots, and Jetsons-style space living, but this motorized Live Luggage PA Series suitcase might just jump-start innovative thinking.

The revolutionary power assisted baggage has electric motors in each of the wheels and sensors that react to your pulling with its own automatic acceleration. Frail jet setters will also enjoy the “anti-gravity” handle that places 85% of the weight onto its back wheels (which also act as generators), making it seem like you're schlepping around less of a load. The price tag of $1,365.25 is steep, and some would argue caring that much about luggage calls for the forfeiture of your balls, but it just might give you that ice-breaker that lands you a technophile in coach. Check for more shots after the jump.
The media shoves so much down our throat these days that it’s hard to know when to believe the hype. Can you help us out? Each week we’re going to be asking you, the readers, to vote on what’s gonna live up to expectations and what’s gonna flop.

Will Eric Gordon smash the NBA? Will Bobby Brown’s son find his own perogative? Will the new John Varvatos store in CBGBs piss off or please punk rockers? Will Batman: Gotham Knight bring John Wayne back? Let it be known after the jump.

Now that the Final Four is over, all eyes are on 19-year-old phenom Eric Gordon. Will the Indianapolis guard be the NBA’s number one draft this June?

“Below the image, a meter displayed each emotion that the computer had detected: Happy. Sad. Angry. Surprised. A trace of a smile triggered the happy meter; a raised eyebrow sent the anger meter skyrocketing.”
