Eats Style & Design 2009: Our Favorite Old School Ice Creams

style-design-ice-cream
Seems like every year there’s a new magical dessert clamoring for attention—and more often than not, it’s some horrible retro-kitsch thing. To wit: rice pudding; creampuffs; inexplicably tangy frozen yogurt. To which we say: meh.

Dessert doesn’t need to be gussied up, it just needs to be cold and sweet and make you feel like a kid. So take it back to the ice-cream man. No Big Worm, no Master P, just some good humor. In this month’s Style & Design issue of Complex we co-signed old-school ice cream (after having a hot model taste-test them for us), and now we’re getting more specific with our five favorite choices…

Design Style & Design 2009: Our Favorite Japanese Pens

pens
Your phone knows your schedule better than you do, but it can’t offer the joy of crossing an item off your to-do list. For that, we go analog. Japan is churning out colors, nib sizes, and designs that make writing more fun than wireless synching. Sure, there’s nothing wrong with grabbing a Bic RoundStic (ayo!) when you need to jot something down, but once you get a look at some of our favorites (all available at our go-spot, JetPens), you’ll be well on your way to becoming a kingpin of the ink pen…

Art My Style & Design Inspirations: Aaron Rose

In Complex’s August/September issue, on stands now, we interviewed a variety of cultural tastemakers for our 2009 Style & Design Package, asking them to list all the things that are affecting their world now, and the things that they feel are going to have an impact moving forward.

One of our four tastemakers (representing the “living” portion of the package) is former Complex Shotcaller Aaron Rose, the man who put on pretty much all of your art heroes back in the day with Alleged, and continues to kill it with projects like ANP Quarterly, Beautiful Losers, and various art shows around the world. He gave us a rundown on the top ten things that he sees affecting his world/our culture right now, and for the next few years. Check out the extended version that didn’t fit in the magazine below…

Rides Two Wheel Motion: 5 Bikes For Any Speed (Style & Design 2009)

Alas, NOT one of the bikes reviewed in our round-up.

In case you hadn’t heard, there’s been this little global financial meltdown going on, so you’re not getting another Hummer for your birthday this year. It’s a good thing, then, that self-propelled locomotion is the move in ’09. From high-end hipster stylings (Freeman Transport’s collapsible fixies) to commuter revolutions (bike-sharing programs in D.C., Denver, Tucson, and elsewhere), America is figuring out what the world’s known for years: Bicycles are a great way to get around when polar bears are doing the backstroke and wars for oil aren’t as fun as they used to be. See below for 5 Great New Bikes For Any Style…

Girls Model Monday: Pearl Veldwijk x Mike Perry (Style & Design)

Creative Direction By Mike Perry; Photography By Matt Doyle

Remember this name: Pearl Veldwijk. Complex has featured the model in the past, but now she’s heating up our annual Style and Design Issue. We paired the Dutch model with Brooklyn artist Mike Perry for an artsy shot that represents the “Living” portion of our Style & Design 2009 package, and the result is so dope that you’re probably going to want to hang it up in your cubicle or dorm room. Check out the Making Of Video with Mike Perry below, then get to know Pearl better with a quick interview and a selection of her hottest pics…
