This iconic Cali brand has been worn by cool kids since 1980. Check out our exclusive gallery of old school ads and photos.

Long ago, when streetwear was called “sportswear,” way back in 1980, Shawn Stüssy, a Cali surf dude—a.k.a. the “Godfather”—built an eponymous brand that was simple in that it embodied everything that he loved. The result was organic and sprawling, mixing surf and skate culture, this new thing called rap, punk, rockabilly, Americana, dinosaurs, and, of course, some Rasta iconography. It was honest, unguarded with a scrawled graffiti logo, and was proudly “an anti-fashion thing.” It grabbed creative kids by the throat, rattled their nomadic hearts, and resonated loudly enough to spur action—which is how grandswells turn into movements. And a movement it became; each subculture declared its loyalty by wearing Stüssy tees, and even as the youth grew up, new kids joined their ranks.

Stüssy maintains relevancy by curating a clever blueprint. One that knows when and exactly how to evolve—and even now, after three decades, it’s why they stay winning. It’s also why the house that Shawn built is both fondly remembered and hotly anticipated and why Complex salutes Stüssy’s 30th birthday with a slick gallery of sick archival shots.

The Campana brothers, Fernando and Humberto, have collaborated with pique polo masters Lacoste for the return of their Special Edition Campanas Polo. For the uninitiated, the Brazilian brethren are renowned for their gorgeous sculptural furniture like the chairs pictured above AND these highly covetable polos of which there are only 100 left. [Lacoste]

Mighty Healthy’s Pop-Up Shop goes up at Reed Space Annex tomorrow! Check their site for more details. [Mighty Healthy]

YO. You have exactly one week to get your money right or warm up that credit card because March 12th is iPad pre-order day with the first shipment streeting on April 3rd. [Crunch Gear]

Madsteez, an artist and frequent Nike collaborator, paints a giant (80 x 30 feet) mural featuring the superstars of soccer outside Ricardo Montalbán Theater in LA. He only had six days to finish the piece just as we had scant moments to learn how to spell Montalbán (not how you’d think, right?). [Sneaker Freaker]

Our favorites Neighborhood and Porter’s Spring/Summer 2010 “Diamond” Wallets are dope. They come in two styles and two colorways, black and blue. [High Snobiety]

The Hundreds‘ iconic Adam Bomb now comes in CHALK flavor. Cop him at THSF and THLA or online starting this weekend. [The Hundreds]

Allister Lee has worked with big names like Supreme, Staple, and Mishka, and the illustrator/graphic designer will be showing his work at Stüssy San Franscisco starting next week. The exhibition is entitled Black is Beautiful. Which it totally is.
This is one mother of an invention. Peep the ingenuity at the rad blog afrigadget, where in the face of scant means and few materials, people have fashioned light bulbs, water carriers and candles out of nothing. Last night, Tom Green made an appearance on For The Love of Ray J to help help Brandy’s brother wade through the remaining three girls. And what surprised us more than Tom Green returning for another season of Ray’s show, was the fact that he was decked out in Crooks and Castles.

Maybe he was just trying to look relevant, or maybe his stylist owed the C & C guys a favor; whatever the reason, it was more random than Lucious (aka, Elle “She smashed the homies” Navarro) deciding to bounce. But it’s not the first time random celebrities have been seen trying to look fly by dipping into the streetwear world. Take a look below to see some of the most random celebrity streetwear moments….

By now we’re sure your closet is packed with flannels in every color. And sure, for the cold weather months, they’re the go-to as far as button ups are concerned, but let us give you a dope alternative. Perfect for the holidays, today’s Buy It Now, the Cowichan Work Shirt from Stüssy, blends Cowichan style (a distinctively-patterned style of knitting developed by Cowichan people of the West Coast of British Columbia) with the classic profile of an oxford shirt. But the best part is, since it’s made out of 100% cotton, this shirt is as comfortable as it is warm. Read below for more detailed images and buy it now info…

Tonight, Eric Haze opens ‘NEW ABSTRACTS AND ICONS’, a three week exhibition of new works
at the LEVEL 2 Gallery at 812 Broadway (@11th Street), in New York City. If you’re around, go check it out. A-Trak and Neil Armstrong will be spinning, and the work is guaranteed fresh.

HAZE’s ability to stay ahead and on top of the ever-changing mediums of artistic expression over the last 30 years has allowed the native New Yorker’s creative impact to reach far beyond the City subway yards and skate ramps of the ’70s. From his early work with Def Jam to starting his own clothing label, HAZE was a predecessor of streetwear, being “big in Japan”, and getting down with Stüssy. Through the years, big brands have gained plenty from a HAZE co-sign, but in return the big homie got exposure and renown. Hit the jump for a history of HAZE’s work in corporate culture, from early logotypes to decking out Nike Dunks and Lotuses…

HAZE x Def Jam, 1987
HAZE’s post-train graphic art made its way onto mad classic album covers. From EPMD to Public Enemy to the Beasties—dude was the hand of ’90s hip-hop. To that, we (and you) tip our caps.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

HAZE x Casio, 1999/2005/2008
HAZE’s relationship with Casio began in 1999 when the Japanese watchmaker tapped him alongside DJ Spooky and Dog Town to be a part of a US “Artist Series” of G-Shock watches. In 2008, Casio appointed him to handle the design of the company’s 25th anniversary logo, as well as the packaging for all watches to be sold in 2008. He also got to design his third G-Shock—the only one to be available worldwide (as opposed to Japan/Europe only releases of the two previous models)—a couple of years back.

These much-sought-after sneakers, as well as the box that they came in, were designed by HAZE. The release marked one of the first times people actually cared about packaging.

Yeah, these hats were initially made to keep you warm but if chicks can get away with rocking Uggs in the middle of summer with short shorts then all-season beanies are cool too. That’s why today’s Buy It Now is this plush beanie from Stüssy. For more info and a detailed pic, hit the jump.

Keep calling it street art, and it will continue to be lame. Look and enjoy, and it will live forever (?) – sorry it was a long morning. Check this profile on NYC-er Aakash Nihalani [It's Nice That]

If you haven’t rotted your brain enough with Twitter/facebook/TV/reading books, XBox is cutting prices on it’s XBox 360 consoles! Rejoice as you dance on the primordial Jell-o that once held your math homework. [Crunch Gear]

You need some new/cheap art for your wall? Don’t say we never helped you out. [Mash Kulture]

Get this: You can actually use a vaporizer for something other than weed. Who knew? [Gizmodo]

Stussy new colection x website = killing it. (Yeah we know how to do math too). [Stussy]

What happens when <strike>you slam a pound of cocaine into your face and design a whole collection in one go</strike> Kim Jones goes in for real on a collection? The new Dunhill. Dope. [Slam x Hype]

Remember the Scarface poster you had on your dorm room wall? Those were the days. Here’s one for your cube. [ANIMAL]
