Complex breaks down the legendary French footballer's quiet cool, as seen at a recent Y-3 show.

Non-soccer fans may only know Zinedine Zidane for his infamous headbutt of Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup, but that’s like reducing Jay-Z’s career to the song “Super Ugly.” For the uninformed, here’s a primer: Algeria x France product grows up playing footie on the hardscrabble streets of Marseille, eventually starring in the French league before becoming the talisman for two of Europe’s biggest clubs—Juventus (Italy) and Real Madrid (Spain). Along the way, he cements his reputation as the world’s best player by leading the French national team to its first (and only) World Cup title in 1998. Through it all, ZZ maintains a swag as serious as cancer with a shatterproof mystique that’s equal parts James Bond and Russian general—quiet, severe, cool. Unlike Becks, Zidane gets respect without having to beg for it.

It’s no wonder, then, that the now-retired footballer has become a muse for famed designer Yohji Yamamoto. After seeing Zidane in person at last week’s Y-3 show, we put together a guide to achieving his understated look…

The best thing about the Gazelle is that it will never go out of style. What started out as an indoor soccer sneaker back in 1968 has been re-appropriated as of late for the skate set, which really just means adidas is making them more comfortable. This new blue/yellow colorup just hit Caliroots for $75 and is perfect whether you’re a kick-flipping machine, or just feeling nostalgic. Brewers fitted not included, nor recommended.

Soccer player or not, it’s tough not to love the Samba. The indoor soccer shoe has maintained its cool factor after first being introduced way back in 1950. Luckily for us, adidas continues to crank out new colorways like this sharp red/black colorway. They’re going to be tough to find in the U.S (what up True Blue IIIs) but legit European retailer CaliRoots has them now for $109 USD. Kick.Game.Proper.

To promote tonight's Showdown in Chinatown soccer match, the NBA MVP talks Jordans, bad suits, and his unusual affinity for fruit.

Two-time NBA MVP (and former Complex Shotcaller) Steve Nash is back in the L.E.S. for tonight’s sequel to last June’s soccer extravaganza, Showdown in Chinatown. The 8-on-8 soccer match, which is for Steve’s charity Football for Good, once again pairs NBA stars with international footballers. Joining returnees like Jason Kidd, Baron Davis and Barcelona’s Thierry Henry this year are newcomers Tony Parker, Chris Bosh, and Inter’s Javier Zanetti.

The action begins at 6 p.m. tonight at Sara D. Roosevelt Park on Chrystie St. between Rivington and Stanton—get there early to get a good seat. (Note: Tickets for the afterparty at the Hudson Terrace are on sale at the Steve Nash site.) To, uh, kick things off, we had a chat with Steve about his favorite sneakers, his worst suit, and which NBA player to watch for tonight …

Interview by Max Schlusselberg

#1: WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER ONE DEAL-BREAKER FOR A POTENTIAL GIRLFRIEND?

Steve Nash says: My wife. [Laughs.] Other than that, I would say a lack of intelligence. Things just don’t last very long when you’re having a conversation with someone who can’t think for themselves.

#2: WHAT’S THE WORST WAY YOU’VE BROKEN UP WITH SOMEONE?

Steve Nash says: I never really had that many serious girlfriends. A lot of unserious girlfriends though, so the break-ups don’t really count. The serious girlfriends I’ve had, have been very respectable and diplomatic so I don’t have any horror stories. But, there was a girl when I was in junior high who for some reason I could never convince to date me.

#3: WHEN’S THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?

Steve Nash says: I would say probably in the last month or so. It had something to do with my family. It was something stupid where emotions got the better of me.

#4: IF YOU HAD A WEEK-LONG HOLIDAY, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Steve Nash says: I’d love to go somewhere warm, somewhere near the beach and somewhere with a cool culture. It could be Hawaii, Cuba, South America—anywhere that has a cool culture and a beautiful climate. I love to spend a lot of time outside and the weather in New York has been terrible lately.

#5. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SNEAKER OF ALL TIME?

Steve Nash says: Right now I wear a lot of—pardon me—Nike, and Vans and Chucks. But for sneaker of all time, I’m sure there’s a few Nikes I love to wear, I just can’t think of them right now. I love the first pair I ever got. They’re the black-and-blue Jordans, the first edition I think.

#6: WHAT’S THE MOST EMBARRASSING PIECE OF CLOTHING YOU’VE EVER WORN?

Steve Nash says: I probably have a lot of them in my closet if we go through the annals of history. But, the suit my agent picked out for me from when I got drafted was just awful. It was a dark suit with white socks and at the time I thought it was really cool. Looking back on it now though it was pretty dismal.

#7: WHAT HAS TO BE IN YOUR FRIDGE AT ALL TIMES?

Steve Nash says: Fruit. I love fruit. Any type, I love it all. My favorite fruit—this sounds kind of fruity—but I love apples, oranges, grapes, bananas, mangoes, melons, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew. I just love fruit.

BONUS QUESTIONS:

Complex: : The 2009 Showdown in Chinatown roster has NBA stars like Tony Parker, Jason Kidd, Baron Davis, and Chris Bosh in the line-up. Who’s the best soccer player and who should stick to basketball?

Steve Nash: I haven’t seen Tony play but he grew up in France so he might be pretty good. Jason played quite a bit in high school and while growing up so I know he’s a pretty good player. I’d say Baron Davis was the worst player last year—but by far the funniest and one of the crowd favorites, so he’ll be starting this year. And Chris Bosh also has a great sense of humor.

Complex: What’s it like playing along soccer stars such as Joe Cole and Thierry Henry?

Steve Nash: It’s amazing. First of all, they’re incredible athletes. And it’s also amazing how the energy of New York brings the best out of these guys. We’re not playing in a stadium, it’s in a park on a street and the fans are standing right next to their heroes. The players really get into it and it makes for such an amazing event. As for competition, professional athletes are professional athletes so everyone’s just as competitive as each other. Everyone’s got an amazing amount of pride and a love for competition that’s been built up over the years.

We're throwing some fashion red cards at the Portuguese soccer star's craziest outfits.

After months of speculation, it appears that Manchester United is finally going to sell Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for a world-record £80-million fee. Translated for non-soccer fans: England’s most famous team is about to sell its best player to Spain’s most famous team for a huge fucking sum of money. Got it?

While the Portuguese midfielder is undeniably one of the world’s best footballers, he’s also one of sport’s most, uh, flamboyant dressers. Now we’re not so immature as to question homie’s off-field predilections (though hooking up with Paris is always a bad look), but it must be said: As far as style goes, Cristiano is totally in a league of his own. If you thought Beckham was a vain prissy boy, then you ain’t seen nothing yet. So, to celebrate his move to Madrid, we’re taking a quick look back at Cristiano Ronaldo’s craziest outfits…
With FC Barcelona now established as Europe’s top soccer club and Spain itself remaining FIFA’s top-ranked national soccer team, we decided it’s time to give the country some Worldwide lovin’. We researched long and hard to field Spain’s next unbeatable team to conquer the world, and we’ve chosen a nimble starting lineup of Spanish beauties that are definitely comfortable with the balls (and good with the head).
The Champions League is back (that's fútbol, folks). But you don't have to appreciate the game to rock a soccer kit. Get started with this selection.

This week brought the return of soccer’s Champions League (Europe’s top club competition), meaning knockout matches between the world’s best fútbol teams for the next three months until two are left standing for the final in Rome. Don’t worry, we’re not gonna try to sell you on the merits of an unpopular sport again. Forget about the actual game, just get up on the shirts. After all, you’ve already humped the look. Having one soccer kit in your repertoire offers a fresh mix-up to your usual T-shirt rotation.

The shirt above is worn by Alessandro Del Piero (pictured), the all-time leading scorer of Italian heavyweight Juventus. (Yeah, they lost to Chelski yesterday, but the gold is fresh.) If you wanna get all matchy-matchy with it, you can pair it with one of these. But not recommended. Our go-to spot in the U.S. for soccer kits is the Onion Bag, mostly because of its diverse selection and authentic name and number sets. (Note: The details are important, but it’s OK to go for the odd Thai bootleg once in a while.) For Buy It Now info for the Juve jersey at Onion Bag and four other fresh soccer kits, see below…

We just got a hands-on look at EA's new soccer title. It's got our early vote for sports title of the year.

We just got back from an EA showcase, and as always, the company has a strong holiday line-up, including a much-improved NBA Live 09, a new cartoon-y boxing title called Facebreaker (think Street Fighter II meets Ring King), the ultra-awesome, ultra-violent sci-fi banger Dead Space, the infamous Spore, and a really cool game that we signed away the rights to talk about until next month.

But the game that really caught our eye was FIFA Soccer 09 (in stores October 14). Somewhere in the last few years, EA’s FIFA franchise caught up with Konami’s Pro Evo series, and now it’s clear that FIFA has passed it for good. Building on the success of FIFA Soccer 08 and the summer’s UEFA EURO 2008 title, FIFA Soccer 09 has the makings of the best footy title ever. Check out our hands-on impressions of the game and more screenshots are after the jump.

GAMEPLAY: We played an exhibition game against a colleague (Arsenal v. England, go figure), and what was immediately evident is the intuitiveness of the controls. What impressed us about UEFA EURO 2008 was the improved “through ball” control, making passes into space seem more like real football. FIFA Soccer 09 builds on that and makes it even smoother, so you can incorporate intricate “Total Football”-style passing into your game. Even as an early version of the title, the game engine felt seamless and the movements instinctual. As good as FIFA Soccer 08 is, the game sometimes feels a little choppy. FIFA Soccer 09 is fluid all the way.

GRAPHICS: Seems like FIFA Soccer 09 has hundreds of new animations'in just a 10-minute game, we saw dozens of them. Collision dynamics are greatly improved (players will jostle each other in pursuit of the ball), the tackling is more varied (i.e., it’s not the same slide tackle over and over again), and player models are more realistic than ever. EA obviously paid attention to the little things too: when you send a player on a run, he points to where he wants his pass, and there are a multitude of ways that players can tumble. You can even tackle your own teammate! (Sorry, Rosicky.)

EXTRAS: We had a lot of fun with the customizable goal celebrations in UEFA EURO 2008 (especially online, suckas!!!), and apparently others did too, because EA put them in FIFA Soccer 09. Nothing better than rubbing a goal in the face of your opponent by executing an elaborate celebration. Overall, the game looks incredible and we can hardly wait to play it for real. Pro Evo, time to stop slacking. You’re getting left behind.

Although we're not with the whole “it-doesn't-matter-how-you-play, as-long-as-you-look-good” motto, we figured it's only fair our fans get a sneak peek of these limited (5 of 5) soccer jerseys team Complex will be rocking during tomorrow's Fanatic VII Soccer Tournament.

We swag-jacked Spain's uniforms and personalized them just in time for tomorrow's day-long battle, where we'll look to <strike> defend our title</strike> not embarrass ourselves. Kickoff for the first game is at 12 noon and our first match is against the sports-obsessed street-fashion brand No Mas. See the front of the jersey and the tourney flyer after the jump.
“Who killin’ ‘em in the U.K.?”

The sports jersey game never really recovered from Jay-Z’s anti-throwback mandate in 2003, but there remains an unexploited frontier'the world of soccer uniforms (or “football kits,” to be more precise).

Pusha T rocks an all-black long-sleeve Manchester United kit in Clipse’s “Fast Life” video, making it one of the first times we’ve ever seen an American rapper wear a soccer uniform as a fashion statement. After last year’s piss-poor performance at adidas' Fanatic soccer tournament, Team Complex has been searching for ways to improve our game. It looks like this Kicker Machine might do the trick.

The arcade-style practice game measures how hard you kick, and also helps you master the proper way to strike a soccer ball. There's also a multi-player mode where you and your crew can take bets on who has the most powerful leg. At a cost of $7890, it’s a little out of our league. Time to send the collection plate around the office. Watch a video of the Kicker after the jump.
As far as pickup games go, tomorrow night’s match-up should go down in history. Steve Nash has organized a charity soccer match called “The Showdown in Chinatown” that will feature all-star participants like the NBA’s Jason Kidd, Baron Davis, David Lee, Leandro Barbosa and Raja Bell, along with professional foot-ballers Thierry Henry, Claudio Reyna, Steve McManaman, and Robbie Fowler.

We’ll have to put off watching that TiVo’d episode of Pros vs. Joes for another night, because there’s no way we can pass up an opportunity to see Henry dangle the dignity out of David Lee. The event takes place tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m. in Roosevelt Park on Chrystie St. between Rivington and Stanton. Watch the videos after the jump to get a preview of Nash’s soccer skills.
This summer adidas will team up with the Chinatown Soccer Club, a collective that formed during the first installment of the three-stripes' “Fanatic Tournament” for a limited edition lifestyle soccer boot called the Top Sala.

The CSC started out as just another powerhouse team in adi's annual tournament, but today has grown into a year-round soccer league located in NYC's Chinatown, where futballers engage in friendly matches. The low-run (350 were made in total) sneaker, will be reserved for retail spots like Dave's Quality Meat (NYC), Arkitip (LA) and Stil Laden (Vienna, Austra) and will release early June.

After his impressive half field goal this weekend, we take a look at some of the soccer icon's best shots.

Looks like soccer icon David Beckham’s best years might not be completely behind him. After retiring from Real Madrid, it didn’t seem like competing with the B and C level talent in the MLS would be much of a challenge for Becks. Even with the L.A. Galaxy throwing $250 million big ones his way to spark America’s interest in futbol, he’s kept a pretty low profile (aside from going to Lakers games).

But we (like Kansas City) were stumped this weekend when Beckham capped off the 3-1 beating with a 70-yard half field goal straight from '96. The KC Wizards should have known better than to leave their goal more exposed than a socialite’s cooch with the veteran footballer around. The impressive play had us reminicing on some of Becks’ other great goals from his 16 year career. Watch 5 of the best (including his most recent feat) after the jump.

We've long been fans of Nike futbol'er, soccer'commercials, which only seem to get better through the years.

Well, the swoosh has outdone themselves this time. Nike premiered its new ad during yesterday's Manchester United v.
After playing a game in Florida on Tuesday, 5 Communist kickers have gone into hiding. The more (Olympic-level athletes) the merrier!

On Tuesday night, five members of Cuba’s national soccer team quietly slipped out of the Doubletree Hotel in Tampa, Florida. Only hours after tying it up in an Olympic qualifying match against the U.S., team captain Yenier Bermudez, goalie Jose Manuel Miranda and 3 others vanished into the night.

The players have now confirmed that they are seeking political asylum from their Commie homeland'America’s “wet-foot, dry-foot” policy states that any Cuban is allowed to stay in the U.S. as long as they reach American soil. After a year, they can apply for citizenship.

After bouncing from the hotel, they jumped in a friend’s car and headed east to nearby Lake Worth. Once there, they bought cell phones, contacted a lawyer and celebrated their freedom.

This is bad news for Cuba’s Olympic hopes'after two additional players left last night, and one player was suspended on Tuesday, only 12 Cubans can now play in tonight’s match against Honduras. However, it’s good news for U.S.'the general manager of the MLS’s Miami FC team is already holding a tryout for the defects next week. In fact, he was pretty much expecting them to defect from the jump. “I watched their game against the U.S. on TV, and I thought the Cuban team played very well,” the GM said. “We were kind of scouting that game because anytime a Cuban team comes to the United States, there’s a chance someone might defect.”

We’d like to extend an open invitation to any remaining members of the Cuban team to come hide out in the Complex office (we’re looking for a good cigar hook-up).
